howdy,

okay since my mixer's deader than chandra leavey, i'm gonna have to do a really weird signal processing chain...and wanna know if i would have any problems doing so. to hook up all my synths to get to one out put, im thinking of hooking them up in this way:

JP-8080 Output-------->Nova Input

Nova Output------------->Virus Input

Virus output------------->soundcard ins

so would that create any delay or have any problems? gonna have to rough it like that till i get a mixer lol

Andrew

in the meantime i've always felt it's a good idea to have a mixing board worthy of all the gear you got running through it. especially when it's such FINE gear.

E, what you're doin is a cool thing. Respect for everybody out there trying to help their community. However, I'd just like to expand on something Clay said, dink or not, ;P , your mixer is the heart of your sound, and anything you have will only sound as good as the mixer you put it through. Daisy chaining your stuff together like that is unwise, because every time you put one signal into another box, it has to go through preamp/buffering, encoding, processing, then decoding, and another preamping then onto the next box. so figure that the JP8080's sound is going to have gone through a whole bunch of processing, dithering and such just to get from its outputs to the convertors on your card. Not only that, but every time you are combining two signals into the same path they both have to divide the headroom for the energy and dynamics in that circuit/calculation, so you're losing more dynamics each time you sum. For example if you put two kicks into the same channel, you have to set the maximum output for each one so that it makes room for the other in order to not clip the signal, so neither can come out of the box/boxes with an output of -0db at its peak in the channel, or even close to that. That said, more channels and instrument separation help get better dynamics out of each instrument. Obviously there are other factors. A 12-channel Neve console will sound better than a 32-channel Mackie in most applications, but that's not because of the number of channels. The bottom line is that whenever possible, try your best to not skimp on a mixer. Good luck.
