I've already got a AN1X (haven't figured it out yet) but have heard the sounds on the CS1X and like what I hear, so, is it worth me investing in a CS1X or a DB50XG daughterboard?

Alternatively, is there an outboard module version of the CS1X? MU90R? SY700XG?

Any ideas?

Depends on what you want to use it for...for GM and some
synth sounds get the DB50, I don't know what yer AN1X will
do, it might have all yer performance needs already

Rouge....Dont bother getting a CS1x. The only difference between the sound of it and a DB50 are the performance sounds. But the DB50 can load up sounds from the QS300 (Up to 32 at a time) and they are just as good as the CS1x performances. The only other factor is the hands on aspect since the DB50 has no knobs for realtime control, but you could put the card with a Phat.Boy controller which will give you realtime control over basically all the parameters of the voices on the card and they can be had for as little as 120 quid new. Remember that the CS1x is about 400 quid more than the DB50.
The MU10 is the external module equivalent of a DB50. But the higher MU models will give you more voices, effects and polyphony. Hope that helps

Naw... I dont think so... the two synths are totally different. I dont really know a whole lot about the AN1x... but I know it actually generates its own sounds, where the CS1x is sample based.

I own both the CS1x and DB50XG. I think they're both great. But I agree with Will. With this new XG-Gold program thats out you can load these excellent 4 element patches from the QS300 right into you DB50XG. And these patches are similar to the presets on the CS1x (including stuff like "Sub Bass" and "909 Kit" )

The db50 is so cheap these days ($80 in the US) you might want to consider just getting both.

The AN1X is a virtual analogue buddy!
CS1X - Control synth (based on samples - y'know!)

Kilo - I think you're fucking mad. You Hear Me!

Go and take your pills and rest now ...

Anyway, is there an external module that has ALL the CS1X sounds in it. I can use the AN1X as a controller...

Whats this QS3000 thingy??

Rouge...The QS300 is a workstation keyboard from yamaha. Its recently been discontinued, but cost about Ģ1300 in its prime.
A module like the MU100R will Shit on the sounds from the CS1x, but may cost a bit more- the SW1000XG card, will have all these sounds on it but you will be limited to lugging the PC around live, but would be cool with a Phat.Boy

If you have an an1x already then you pretty much have all the capability you need for performance sounds, i would say, and it sounds like you need just general kind of other sounds for pianos and strings and stuff. i'd lean towards a non-keyboard module - either the db50xg card or an MU unit.

i'd go for an mu unit - because the db50's inside your pc and will be getting mixed with digital audio at the output - so no external fx in the mix easily (unless you have a multiout). whereas if you have a module it's just as easy to use via midi as the internal card and you have a kind of extra output.

then again, you'd need a mixer, and you could start using up all your midi channels on your external port. but you shouldn't really. just my view...also then you could take the module gigging without having to lug either the pc (with the db50) or an extra keyboard (the cs1x) around.

will

Last weekend I bought a bunch of equipment (and I mean a bunch) for a bargain from a friend of mine who needed the money fast (and I happened to have it because I was planning on buying a car (who needs a stinkin car anyways), and it was really a bargain).
It included also an AN1x and a CS1x. The CS1x surprised me because it's got some very nice sounds for such a cheap keyboard, and I was much faster able to get some nice sounds out of it compared to the AN1x. But then, althought it's got 32 polyphony, it seems that when you're in performance mode, it can only be used monotimbrally. And for as far as I know you can only use it as a multitimbral device when it's in the xg mode, and then you can't make use of most of those nice sounds in there. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd say that if you can get it 2nd hand, it's worth it's price, but a new one isn't worth the money they want for it.

Purple Haze...you are wrong about performance mode ... the performance users 4 parts, leaving up to another 12 on which you can do all kinds of crazy sounds ... the performace ones...that you can't access in multi- (XG) mode.

I have a CS1x and an SW60XG which with the new XG Gold software is like having a cheap second CS1x....and I have a Phat.Boy.....so I am in heaven..... but the new SW1000XG....when it comes out...will be the card to have.

Rumours are there will even be AN1x and A3000 daughter cards for it...sounds far fetched... but would be so cool

Is the PhatBoy worth getting just for using with an MU10?

Isn't the MU10 just basically a GM module, doesn't have full XG ?

I wouldn't get it for a bog standard GM module.

I think it sends out NRPNs specific to XG

Where can I get a db50 for $80? Or how 'bout an mu10? BTW, I'm surprised this unit didn't do better, laptop friendly & gives an extra midi i/o w/o wasting an isa slot.

Do you get the 'sub-bass' preset on the DB50XG?

Does the MU10 have all the sounds of the XG then?

Cept I dont think that the MU10 has the ability to load the qs300 voices like teh db50 and sw60 can. This was a feature I think specificaly programed into these two cards. Maybe Im wrong, but the XG-Gold software (the program that makes it easy to load these) says that only the db50 and sw60 do this. And these qs300 voices are the ones with the cool patches like "sub bass" and "rave organ" and "909 Kit" (ie.. dance oriented stuff).

I found the db50 in a local computer store for $80... but I also found it at a online computer store for I think $90. This is the site: www.computability.com
The sw60 was quite a bit more I think... close to $200.

With a DB50 you don't get a arpeggiator do you?

I'd only recommend a CS1x to a newcomer with no other kit, who needs a keyboard, and who has a PC for sequencing... but be warned: the basses are crap. I'd say buy a sampler next, especially if you're considering the planet phatt, or Orbit...you may as well buy an ESI32 or S2000 for the price...They're basically an offshoot of Emu's sampling technology repackaged in an easier to use but more limiting (and lucrative) form

ROuge... the qs300 voices we're talkin about are the preset 4 element voices from the Yamaha qs300... which is a workstation thats recently been discontinued. Exact copies of these voices can be dumped into the db50xg with the help of a program like XG-Gold, which takes care of the sysex messages needed to do the sample dump. Yup... there's actually RAM on the db50xg that can be used for samples from teh qs300.

Rouge.....About that arpeggiator. Check out seq-303 with the DB50. Kilo's got a RA demo of it in the synths and modules section if you haven't heard it already. You'll be surprised!
