It includes WINDOWS MME (Multi-Media-Extensions) and Direct X (or Direct Sound) functionality.
This driver allows you to configure VST for your special audio PC hardware to get the best performance.
I.e. you can setup the number of tracks, buffersize, choose full duplex mode, select sync. ports, and many other things.
Some few soundcard and digital I/O manufacturers do offer special ASIO drivers for their cards. Others rely on MME and/or Direct X functionality of Steinberg´s ASIO setup.
ASIO settings do directly influence the latency time of your VST - PC - soundcard system.
Optimizing the settings can help you to get the best out of your sysnem. But sometimes the settings are hard to understand for recording beginners.
