I think mp3 does data reduction (like ATRAC on mini-discs) i.e. everything which it thinks you won't hear (based on Psycho-Acoustic research) gets thrown away. Forever. This Emagic zapper is zero loss - bit for bit. Nothing gets thown away, it just gets very cleverly compressed.
