So I'm listening to a cd from a local rock/blues artist (www.jenkearney.com - hell of a voice) - and I extracted the audio and did some analysis. Now, I'm no expert producer, but I've been around. Seems a little oversquashed to me - the RMS is around -10db which seems excessive for this type of music - it totally squashes out her voice, and steals some of the natural dynamics. Seems like the producer did a little too much.

Although I will say, she is one of the best songwriters I've heard in a LONG time.

i think bass-level regulation is the future.

That ProRec article is dead on. Vapor Trails is a horrible sounding record. Easily the worst recorded of Rush's career, and that's saying a lot. I like the sound of their records from the '70s much better.

yeah... that's right graig. I remember the sound of rush..
really transparent and... ehm...friendly. Even though some
bits are (musically) really hard and full > desolate
guitarsolo's and bouncy percussion. is it true that they
didn't do any overdubs. Has Neil Perth 4 arms?
That song about the bushes in the forest that get all p'd off
by the oaks and other big trees that steal al the light. So
they bushes go on strike or something. I don't have that
tape anymore, not for years.
funny..

The Mastering Engineers Handbook has a series of interviews with various mastering engineers of note and there is a theme that runs through the interviews regarding apparent volume and the lack of dynamics in much of the music being produced these days.

I've just finished four pieces for a couple of local college radio stations and I am considering not "mastering" them. They are ambient in nature anyway so "loud" is not a requisite. They're all 16 bit, 44.1 so there is no need to dither. I'm thinking sequence, fades, a little EQ, some limiting (very little to, quite frankly, fix a relative level problem on one piece that I kinda fucked up before I thought about releasing it) and no compression.

After reading what I've read over the past few years I would be interested to hear more natural music because I've begun to wonder how long its been since I listened to anything outside of classical music that wasn't "mastered" beyond reason. With a good mix that needs no corrective surgery I have begun to wonder about the relevance of anything outside of sequencing, level matching, and EQing for tonal coherence.

WTF have I been listening to! I've been duped! Its not real music! In the end I guess the bottom line is, depending on the music: does it help make the miles go by faster, does it help make cleaning my apartment seem less mundane, does it have a good beat that I can dance to, does it seemingly enhance mine and my partner's orgasm, and oh yeah, does it inspire me.

Its late.

I've seen Rush live 6 times, and you'd swear Peart does have four arms. He's easily the best drummer I've ever seen, out of about 70 bands or so.

Anyways, I do agree that loud mastering does seem to take a lot of that undefinable "something" out of the music. I'd love to see more dynamic records.

so how do we change that?

put out a record thats not loud enough and people complain about it!

personally, Id rather learn how to do proper mixes than have them LOUD

Or follow the lead of Charlie May and use heavy compression to work for your sound, not just to boost it.

Regards.

Stephen.

right now there's no more headroom because we've
reached a ceiling (0db) so really there's no place left to go
except lower.

collectively everyone needs to not hypercompress
everything and discussions like this will do some good.

and after people start to get tired of hearing over
compressed music everyday on the radio and cds eventually
it will start to change.

The average idiot won't get tired of it. They don't know any better.

It's all beacause of execs trying to get their song to be louder on the radio
