Original Message 1/4 10-Dec-98 @ 03:18 AM - eps,mirage,prophet2000,s900???
Im not familiar with samplers because where i live
nobody knows what a sampler is.My only resource is the net.Now i've have found 4 samplers in my budget which is 400$.They are as follows:
Ensoniq Mirage,EPS,SCI Prophet2000,and akai s900.
The mirage is pretty cheap and ive heard it has good filters that make sounds even better but its 8 bit. Some people say its sounds like crap others say it sounds good. The eps sounds good to me but its dependability is questionable and i read it doesn't have resonant filters.Does this mean it has no resonance? The prophet2000 also sounds good
but i read that it isn't multimbral and i know nothing about the akai s900.I need a sampler that is fairly easy to play live and have pretty good editing, filter capabilities. It will be used for everything i record because i have a cs1x.Could someone help me choose a sampler, give more info,or
possibly recommend any other samplers. Please don't say to buy a 16 bit cause i can't afford it right now.

i have seen emax II's going down in the $300-500
range lately, those are a little better in many
ways, and not as good in some ways.
the original emax is only 12 bits, 8 voices, 8 separate
outs. each out is monophonic. analog resonant filters
(ssm 2047).
i think the emax II is 16 bits, 16 voices, still
8 separate out (polyphonic). digital resonant
filters (supposed to sound good).
the casio fz-1 is supposed to have a lot of character
too, digital resonant filters, 16 bits, 16 voices,
not as easy to use as an emax II.
and then my personal fave
![](smiley.gif)
real analog resonant filters (cem 3387, so they
don't sound like an emax), corded remote, built-in
scsi, etc. got mine for $425. pretty rare though.
i've seen a prophet 2002, i think it would be easy
to use: no menu, just a data wheel, an LCD and a bunch
of buttons, one for each parameter. cool. they also
use some kind of cem filter. still 8 voice.
btw, don't think of "resonant filters" as some kind
of catchall, you might not need them. i don't use the
ones in my p3k that much (i do use them occasionally
though). i already have other analog synths I use
for that kind of thing though, including a dss-1 (which
i LOVE!) do you want to play back drums? the s900
and eps are supposed to be "punchy", and cheap (a friend
recently got an s900 for $200, and i've seen eps's
around $250-300).
incidentally if you're thinking about a mirage
(which some like due its 8-bit sampling) you can
always truncate to 8 bit yourself, some samplers
let you do this and if you're dumping sounds from a PC
over SDS you can always do it in cool edit or something..
the DSS-1 is 12 bit, but lets you set the output
bit depth to 12, 10, 8, or 6 bits!!...pretty cool...
48Khz at 6 bits heh...
for the ultimate cheap sampler, if you've got a PC
there are some decent soundcards, the TB maui can
be had for $40, no filters at all but lots of
lfos and stuff for sound mangling. and i doubt it's
noisier than an early sampler...
oh yeah, i've only owned an emax and a prophet 3000
(and a maui), i still have the p3k and the maui...
so take the above with a pound of NaCl....
