If my friend wants to use Pro tools on a G4 Mac-laptop and is going to get the cheapest version available (with the M-box, which only has 2 inputs) then can he still use a mixer to record more tracks at once? Could you please tell us some of the possibilities available that would allow him to do this. Is it possible to get a separate soundcard with multi inputs as opposed to having to get an expensive digi-design rack? Thanks L.Dudley

with an Mbox system, you're going to be limited to 2-tracks in and out. Obviously, you can overdub up to 32 tracks on an LE system and mix to stereo outs, but with M-Box 2 ins is all you'll ever have. If you need to record more sources at once, you will have to mix them with an external hardware mixer and get it all down to a stereo pair that you can send to the M-box. Of course, this will limit mixing possibilities severely. What does your friend's usual recording session consist of?

Cheapest option up would be a used Digi001 setup. This will get you 8 analog i/o and 8 adat i/o's if you want to expand to 16 ins and outs.

get a 002 rack -

the mbox caries gretaer latency, which is just a plain hassle in this day and age- It has a 'make up' code in the software for mbox, which alligns to the 128 samples it sits out on recording, which for a digidesign card is just plain obscene compared to what you can achieve with cheaper cards (athough you cant use the pt software without a digidesign device)

Bottom line, Laptop, your going to want a 002 rack to step into the world of protools (which is absolutely INCREDIBLE) Its as damn near perfect a solution as there is right now (imho)

you can even add on a cheap lightpipe/adat interface to give you another 8 inputs/outs for another 150 squid with something like an Alesis AI3 - giving you 16 ins/outs and Protools 32 track Sequencing.

If your not keen on using protools and have a different sequencer bare in mind theres plenty of great alternitives around the mbox price range by other manufacturers.
