If you are familiar with The AWE64 or another sampling soundcard, then you know that one can just upload a sample without making it a preset or program or patch or whatever you want to call it. Its just a sample with no extras. Now that plain sample can be assigned its own midi channel. With samplers like the A3k and the ESI4k can you assign a plain sample to a midi channel without making the single sample a preset or a program ?? I think it would be must faster if you didn't have to do single samples like that. Does anyone know if the above is possible??

just got an akai s2000, which i'll presume is similar to the 3. on the s2000 you have to assign samples to programs in order to use them. you're limited to 16 programs in multi mode.
the editing is very responsive on the akai, so it's pretty fast to set up. can't imagine why you want to send on seperate channels (two controllers?) but there you go.

I want a multitimbral mode thats all. It just might be alot of fuss to make a sample a preset on some
samplers.

as said, not the 3 but the s2000 has 16 progs max in multi mode. haven't used it yet, but all the editing/loading i've done is pretty quick. it takes the better part of a minute to load a program with a dozen samples, but only a couple of seconds to load an individual sample. once you get used to nosing around the system, it's only a matter of seconds to stick a sample in a program, unless you're going to tailor the filter or other modulations. you know hardware menus; plus the keys are nice and responsive, so you get into the groove of tapping keys quickly to get where you're going. it doesn't feel like a bother after a while.

For the A3000, it works quite similarly to the S2000. A sample has to reside in a program so you can assign a channel to it. You can audition a sample at anytime, whether it's turned on in a program or not, but you can't 'play' the sample in the same fashion. While it may seem a pain to have to use it in a program setup, it's no harder than turning the sample on/off in the program. Once a sample has been turned on in a program you can play it from whatever MIDI channel you have assigned to it (or in the case of setting the sampler to Omni mode, it recieves from all MIDI channels).

Peace
