it has come to my attention that i may be inheriting (cough!) a G5 sometime in the near future. I have a (probably dumb) question about hardware in the PC and Mac-

Could I use from my pc- the monitor? And I guess it doesn't have PCI slots for my soundcard... :P

Thanks-

Andrew

you forgot to say what your soundcard is.

open your manuelos.

and oh~....do inherit on .....as you've only just begun.
you'll get used to it.

please tell us what you inherit next.

lots of peripherals are compatible between architectures, specifically USB and PCI stuff. Just look on the manufacturer's site for mac drivers (and know which version of Mac OS you will be running, as it is important)

well the soundcard is compatible- just checked due to psy's rather obvious advice   thanks-

but about the monitor...would that work? different connection issue or something?

most mac video cards (even the stock g4/g5 out, I do believe) are regular PC VGA stylee outputs. if not, adapters are available. I'm tellin ya, macs are just really expensive pc's! but hey, if ya get two, don't forget my rather obvious advice innit

yup - I didnt open up a G5 yet, but the g4's are just a pci based PC with a risk processor running osx which is based on 'another' os anyways - A standard cheap 20 quid agp graphics card, an IBM deathstar drive, and two dimms of some old slow ram was in the G4 I checked out. I worked out based on the added components included that you were paying about 1800 quid for the case motherboard & chip (ex screen)

lately macs seem to have SVGA & ADC connections. ADC is similar to DVI you often see on PCs (w/ USB added so you can plug in your USB keyb & mouse). There are converters for ADC->DVI & for DVI->SVGA, so I bet there is a ADC -> SVGA option out there too.

I use a Geffen ADC switcher to toggle between mac & pc on the 22" cinema display at work. I love when bands come in and get all upity when they see Windows (which all creative types know is absolutely evil) on a sacred object of desire (Apple Flat Panel display.)
