single hits and program a drum pattern? How do you chop up loops to make variations of the one bar loop you have to use and still keep the feel
of that loop?

Now, load your WAVE file of your drumloop into Wavesurgeon. You can play with the sensitivity scale to chop it up by particular beats. This is great if you want to just remove one hit and replace it with another. Or you can chop the loop by 1/8th or 1/16th notes, or you can just drag'n'drop cuts anywhere. Save your work to wave files (in the file menu).
So now you've got some cut-up bits of beats. Open Fruity Loops and load your sounds (drag'n'drop or whatever). Set the tempo to the tempo you want. If you want the same feel as the original, keep the original tempo, or close to. Now go nuts. Just work that thing. If you want to substitute one drum for another, pull in the sound you want to use, then hit that sound instead of the original in the sequence. It's quite easy, and sometimes you get unexpected rhythms that are neat-o.
Fruity Loops is also great for making your own loops from scratch, with just one-hit drum samples. There's some effects available too. Um, either register the new PRO version (for $30, it's well worth it) or download the old beta, or you won't get enough tracks to play with.
