Subject: Multitimbrel use
Original Message 1/19 29-May-00 @ 05:47 PM - Multitimbrel use
I selected Performance mode/performance A 126 multi ch 1-6
Then I pressed part 1 in part edit which gives me Bank A program A000 sintilltor. So far, so good.
Then when I select a new program using bank and prog. buttons to select say, A002 softena bass, the Nova changes from Performance mode to Program mode and I can not access the part edit parameters for instance midi, I/O, tune, velocity, etc.
I have read part edit only works in Performance mode but, if you want to assign programs to different midi channels for multitimbrel use how-to?
Again, when in Performance mode,(A126 Multi Ch 1-6) selecting Part Edit 1 (sintilator M-wh A000) and then changing to program A002 softena bass puts the Nova into program mode and I can't assign differant programs for multitimbrel use.
I am reading further into the manual P.24 + editing and writing programs and performances. P. 80 part edit section.
So far, no insight.
P.18 reads straight forward enough but, its not working when I try to select a new voice. What am I missing? How to get the Nova to work for Multitimbrel use?
Thanks for any help.

I had the exacy same problem.
You need to set the "Global" midi
chanel to 16. This is in the Global
section.
I donr know how to make ot stay at
16 but when you do everything works
as it should.

Setting the Global ch. to 16 works with multitimbrel setup.
and the preset performances will play with global ch. set to 16
To save the setting: press write and it asks to confirm, press 'write' again and the Global settings are saved.
Of course, the two songs I have been working on with the Nova so far, are set to Global midi ch. 2!
No problem, I can always change. I just wanted to know how utilize the the multitimbrel programs.
No where have I yet, come across (in the manual) the trick of setting global to ch. 16!
Where did you pick that up?
Anyway, thanks again.
Btw- having mucho fun!

A program change message in a part that uses the global midi channel will make the Nova change to performance mode.

If the SN receives a Prog Change message on its GLOBAL MIDI channel then it will select the Program in Program Mode instead. I've had similar problems on other multi-timbral kit (for example a Yamaha TX81Z, so I don't think its a problem unique to Novation.
The best solution to this I think is to do what I do. Simply make sure that the sequencer's SOFT THRU (or ECHO BACK etc) is disabled while you're setting up a Performance. You could also temporarrilly disconect the MIDI OUT cable from the SN instead.
Do this whenever you're actually setting up a Performance and you'll be fine and won't have to worry about GLOBAL MIDI channels etc.

With the Supernova / Nova you have the possibility to change a whole performance in a song by a midi message. Further on you can switch from Program mode to Performance mode and back with the appropriate message.
The developers of Access knew about the deficits of musicians about midi specifications and the features of their sequencers. They solved the problem by simply leaving those features away ;-)
