I can't work something out. I am using the rimshot playing sixteenths
to trigger the external clock in of my 101 at one note per quater note,
effectively making a sixteen step sequencer of the 101/per bar (up
to 100 steps isn't it?).
I know this set up should work, because I have done it before, but I
can't figure it out. I have even gone as far as to resolder the clock
in jack. I know it is recieving a signal as if I plug the cable into
my mixer, I get the notes. And I know the sequencer is working,
because when I unplug the clock in cable, the internal clock takes
over and plays the sequence.
So what could be causing the sequence not to work from an external
clock?

Cheers.

Describe exactly how you have it all connected up, in the meantime try touching a small bulb or LED on the trigger lead to see if the pulse is being transmitted.

I am running an audio cable from the rimshot output on the 909 to the external clock in on the 101. The 909 is playing a rimshot pattern which is trigering on each quarter note.
When the audio cable is plugged directly into my mixer, it gets the rimshot signal, so I know that is working (as far as to the end of the audio cable). This leads me to think that it must be the 101. Unless the signal is just not strong enough, but like I said, it has worked before with this set up.

Sometimes I wonder at my suitability with electronics... ;}

Dude, you are plugging in the audio out, but you need to plug into the trigger output, it should work fine then

No no, what in the world??

The ONLY way I know how to trigger the 101 perfec2tly is to use the 909 or 606 and send the low/tom or the rim shot out of the 909 to external clock in on the 101. As you are doing, BUT you have to step in ALL 16 steps in the 909. Or you'l drift like a trainwreck, unless your purposely trying to get that syncopated effekt. But if you want true 16 step XOX sequences from the 101 you have to do it this way...

actually, oldschool's right, use the "trigger out" jack, on a 909 it'll send a trigger pulse whenever the rimshot's played... using audio outs works sometimes, but the trigger was designed to drive things like the 101's trig. in...

Also you can get some really cool variations by changing the rimshot pattern around moving beats etc.

Cheers people! We have success. Use the rimshot, but not from the rimshot audio output, but rather a seperate output which uses the rimshot to be its trigger. Phew! glad thats sorted. Must be why it worked before, I looked at the back of the thing and read the shite.

Systems are GO!

My setup consists of a 101 , a tb-303 ,korg EA-1 , korg ER-1 and coming soon an akai MPC 2000 XL.Is it possible to sync up my 101 with one of the above ? I'm reading all this 909 , 606 stuff and am getting a bit weary, I thought a MIDI => CV converter would be sufficient...

that's right! one of the TR's would be the easiest way to get the 101 synced. The 606 has two trigger outs and is quite cheap. You might check it out.
There are basically two ways to sync the 101:
1. triggering the internal sequencer with a drummachine
2. using a midi2cv converter. In this case the internal sequencer would be useless. But you would be able to use the MPC2k instead

Alternativly, you could run the 101 off the 303 sending the cv and gate out from the 303 to the ins on the 101. It will only play the same notes tho'.

Thats a cool thing to do, I used it on a track on the very first Future Music CD! Sounds really cool.
