Have you gone through the presets yet? If not, I suggest you do. If your presets don't sound good at all, then maybe there's a problem? I've found a few good presets that'll work with some tweaking, and have created a couple more that are good...

Yes, those presets are the last ones on Bank D.
I have done a few clips of Virus vocoder too.
Check them out if you like.

Make sure you guys have everything hooked up properly and are getting a good signal from the mic to the Virus. I usually run mine through the mixer's mic preamps before sending to the Virus.

Under "Control" (I think), almost all the way to the right, there's an LFO mode setting, or something like that... There's a setting where the LFO lights indicate the strength of the signal coming in the input. Also under Control (I think) is a setting called Input Boost that you can use as a mic pre to bring the mic up to proper level.

Check that stuff out first... I've gotten some really great sounds out of the vocoder without much fuss... Grab a cool preset, tweak a little until it's perfect, and then go :-)

got the sounds, got everything hooked up correctly. still not impressed. the machine responds, but you can't understand what I'm saying, which is what this is all about, right ?

boldawn, really?
I thought my own vocoder samples were pretty intelligible.
My friends knew what I was saying through the vocoder.

I have to try again I think, I havenīt managed to get a good vocoder sound....
With the JP8080 it was a bit easier...........................
Are the sounds made for the vocoder really good or has someone better ?

norsez, I didn't refer to YOUR sounds. I havn't checked them out yet. I meant the preset vocoder sounds. BTW, I have tried using a mixer as a pre-amp and I'm using a Shure SM-58 beta, so the mic is not the problem. I think I'm giving up, I'm going to the store for clearing this.

boldawn,
i think what the guy actually meant was
"i can do it on my virus, you should also be able to"
From his example clips I think the Virus can definitely do
pretty good vocoder speech.

Anybody else got a Q with the new OS? Still trying to figure out the vocoder in that thing. Any ideas?

Pongoid, I don't have a Q but for intelligible speech, try the highest number of bands , high resonance with a little cutoff.

I suspect intelligible speech is the most easily attained with more vocoder band like on the Nova (42). I guess so cos MS2000 has 16, Q has 24, Virus has 32 and I haven't heard any Nova user complain about how to get vocoder talking so far...

If it's really not doing it for you, there's software out there. But I seriously think that you're not doing something right.

I KNOW I'm not doing something right. I'm just having hassles with the carrier wave.

Not you Pongoid, I have faith that you'll figure it out soon enough ;-) I mean the guy who isn't getting intelligible vocoding out of his Virus.

Really, it works quite well. Honestly ;-)

The Nova vocoder is by far the most intelligable vocoder I've yet to come across - easy to set up and configure too.

I've owned a good few vocoders in my time (including the Doepfer A-100 modular), so I know what I'm talking about...

String sounds (and bright airy pads) are good for vocoding, and adding a bit of noise/static helps those tough consonant sounds that usually get muffled (s,t,etc.) Getting your mouth ON that mic can help, too. Try with no other effects first--sample and add effects later to keep things clear.

They printed something useful in that rag instead of filling half of it with "10 top artists make a tune with only an MC-505"?
