The synth sounds great from the little I played on it. Having trouble finding feedback on the net about it. Anyone know of the beast? Recommendations?

An original ob12? The thing is a beast, a real powerhouse for sound design. As I recall, the thing has something like 5 LFO's per voice, and some wacky modulation routing options, similar to the Expander in most respects. I saw a coupe of guys do a really sick ambient set with just a pair of Expanders gettin wierd. If you've got the ridiculous amount that most people ask for that sort of treasure, why not, but that's definately not a gigging piece.

PS did you try the hyperreal archives for info?

this is the new oberheim virtual analog, not an old model.

something hard to describe about the oberheim analog sound. i havent heard this va, but i speculate as to whether something "analog" ends up lost in the virtual part. those classic oberheim analog filters... could they be recreated?

Oh, I see. Well, nothing nreally sounds like old Obe's. Very tasty, delicate sounds. Nice. As for the new one? don't know anything about it, but an OBm-x Is a great box.

Woa! This post lit up. Thanks guys. I do have to get in and listen to it again. I don't know what the old OBs are like, but again at a 1st listen, I was impressed. Thing is it was in a store with lots of other synts being played so you know how that is. Wish I knew about it's OS in terms of bugs, or hopefully non-existant bugs.

Hey dude. We e-mailed about the MOTM thing since you posted I guess. Wish I could make it. I played around on the Oberheim again today. It does sound nice. I could hear tunes immediately.

Sitar,
Does the oberheim do good Heavy Bass as well as Moog like sounds. Would it be good for Drum&Bass production?

Where's a gun?

Stoutlyric, I can't honestly say. I've played around with the one they have in my local Sam Ash. It's always pretty noisy in there 'cause everyone is playing synths all at once as you probably know. I do really like the quality of the sounds I'm hearing. I couldn't at first find where the sound was coming from the other day until I looked down and saw a pair of Tannoys laying on their backs on the floor pointed up at me. Whatever works I guess. I'll have to ask for some cans next time.

What a thread. The best kept secret at Dancetech right now. Useless maybe, but the best kept secret nonetheless. Well I'm gonna keep my ears open about the OB12. I just want to find out if there are any OS problems. Salespeople will never tell you even if they know.

Hi all

Allow me to kinda revive the subject of this thread a bit. I've been playing around on an OB12 in a local store recently, and i was actually pleasantly surprised. I had some crazy sounds going in no-time, and i think the FM just rules on this beast. Despite it's 2 oscillators, i thnk it's at least as 'fat' as a Nova or JP-8000 (which i own both). The filter seems to go all the way up to self-oscillation, and i hear rumors that Oberheim tried it's very best to make it sound like the vintage analogue ones. In my opinion, they came a long way, but i'd have to have another listen before i can tell for sure.

Anyone considering buying anything VA should give this one a try.. (and then buy a S/NII   )

What is the deal on the pricing of this.
I see in SOS Turnkey (Sorry) the UK distributor has them advertised for about Ģ800 but their american distributors list $2000 a price differential of some $800 or Ģ530.
Now that is a lot of shipping costs.
So what is going on here?

Haven't checked in to this thread for a while. Thanks for the feedback. I liked the sounds of it too. I'd say it's well worth a look. The price in New York City at Sam Ash is about $1700. One fellow at Sam Ash told me that they have been seeling a lot of OB12s. But that could have been a sales pitch thingy. I hadn't met him before so he doesn't know me. There are a couple of guys there I know and trust.

I thought they described it as"Better than Korgs latest offering".
Whilst secretly whining about the state the OS of the Q.
And tipping their hats to the JP-8000.

With a few more knobs for instant access to parameters (such as Envelopes) it could be more of an instant gratification tool.
