Why do I ask? Well I've got some kick ass sounds I want to share, but I'm a newbie to midi w/ computers.

Can you please give me a little walkthru on how to get the sounds out of my nova and into the downloads section?
Thanks.

OK Mr LightYear (your first name wouldn't be Buzz would it?!?) ......

What your trying to do is initialize a sysex dump from your Nova and simultaneously record it into a MIDI sequencer.

1) Make sure you've got a MIDI out from the Nova to the MIDI in of your sequencer. (I'm assuming you've already got your sequencer/MIDI interface setup and can receive notes/pitchbend etc)

2) Turn off any MIDI filtering on your sequencer - eg. sysex record is filtered by default on cubase.

3) Somewhere in the Globals menu on your Nova is a page like 'Sysex Dump : All Programs' (or something similar)
You can scroll through the different options that let you 'dump' anything from a single program/performance (the one you've currently got selected) through single banks of programs/performances, to the whole data in memory!
It's pretty straight forward really

4) Also in your Globals menu is a setting for the 'Global MIDI Channel'.
Find out what it is and setup a track on your sequencer to receive that MIDI channel.

5) Go back to the 'Sysex Dump' page in Globals. Select your 'dump' poison!

6) Hit record on your sequencer and then hit the Nova button that starts the dump (on my Supernova II it's the MIDI button - the one that flashes whenever there's MIDI communication to/from the synth).
I only know my SuperNova II but I guess the menus are pretty similar on the Nova. Check your Nova's manual!

7) The Nova's screen will keep you informed as to the status of the dump.
When it says 'Done' and returns you to the Globals page press stop on your sequencer.

8) Next save the sequencer file in Standard MIDI file format. It should be an option when you have to type in the filename. If the sequencer then comes up with a load of options just OK them - the defaults should be fine.

9) Finally, come back to Novation Chat and click the UPLOAD FILES link at the top of the front page (or email me it as an attachment!)
Follow the instructions (again, very simple) and Voila!

Easy init?!?!?!

Gavi B! Your the winner of some new
patches, brought to you by means of
Fed-sys-Ex delivery! And I guess
everyone else can have some to.

Thanks though for real man!

I tried to start a new topic, but there
was an error... So I'm posting my plea
for help here (it's sort of related).

I checked the last year in this chat to
see if anyone else has asked this
(newbie) question, but if I missed it
let me know.

The Nova's manual is great at explaining
how to use the Nova, but not so good
explaining how to select the parts to be
used within a performance via a
sequencer, Logic in my case.

Can anyone offer some advice or maybe
even a MIDI file with the sysex in it
for me to look at?

I've tried recording the sysex as I
select performance 126 and select voices
for parts 1 through 6 but it doesn't
respond correctly when I play it back.

Basically, I want the sequencer to
trigger part changes while playing, not
manually.

Any help or sample files are
appreciated! My email

Selecting a Part from the Nova front panel sends a MIDI NRPN message, not a Sysex message.

The easiest way to put this into a sequencer is to simply record in real time on a track while you select the appropriate Part from the front panel. Afterwards, make sure the track is set to playback on the Nova's "Global" MIDI channel. When you play the track back, all should work fine.

Mmmm, maybe I mis-understood you.

My above advice was for Part Selection - ie selecting the "current Part".

Is this what you wanted to know, or do you want to select new PROGRAMS for each Part ?

I want to select new programs for each
part.

I've heard that some messages need to be
sent on a 'Glabal Channel' and some on
the channel set for each of the Nova's
1-6 parts. Am I on the right track?

I've also read about MIDI loops causing
problems...

As I said, simply recording the SysEx
doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for your

Doh! After re-reading the manula
several time I think I got it:

Send Performance data on the
global channel, which is 1 by default.

Send Part data on the individual
channels.

It's nice that the Nova relly only uses
SysEx for the programs - everything
else is a controller #. Too bad it uses
like all 127 controller #s!!!

I guess it's time to write some
patches!! Thanks fer yer help!
