What's up people. I've been all over this internet looking for info that will lead me to the right soundcard purchase. To be frank... GODDAMN my head is spinning! Since my needs are pretty basic, I was originally sold on the sblive with the aps drivers... then I realize that it only has 1/8" jacks for analog outs? Am I missing something or is that right? That seems pretty lame and unreliable for a piece of equipment that you will want to use for the long haul, right? Well... here's where I'm at. I'm into breakbeat musics of all sorts, and my style combines sampled loops, programmed drums, synth parts.. sampled acoustic instruments, some vocals, etc.. standard I guess. All I want to do is devise a system that works for me, so that I can sequence all this stuff using midi, either a software sequencer, my rm1x, or a combination of the two... send each part to it's own channel in an analog mixer, that's important, as I am not into mixing and eq'ing within the digital domain AT ALL, and then send the master out to a recorder. What I want the soundcard for is recording things like vocals, instruments, etc.. and monitoring during sample editing, softsynth programming, and a midi interface between controllers and my computer. Originally I wanted to use a multi out card with a softsampler, or soundfonts to replace a real hardware sampler, but that gets so confusing and I'm afraid I'll spend more time worrying about my damned gear than I will making music. So, I guess what I want to know is.. should I just get something simple and cheap like a sblive or emu aps for those basic needs, and then go ahead and get a rocking sampler for the actual audio output of my samples, along with synths, or whatever modules I might decide to get? Or is there some reason I would benefit from acquiring a really dope soundcard that can basically do everything? Remember, I am looking for simplicity here. I want to get my setup running, and not have to think about it, so I can concentrate on writing, and nothing else. Thanks in advance, you guys are a bunch of gurus, I swear.

Hey there, for such a basic need application - I have just the card for you... Get the SBLive with the APS drivers and get the Live Drive from Creative labs. This adds 1/4" Jacks to the front of your PC.

- OR - goto www.echoaudio.com and look up the MIA... Simple, and sweet!

What's the problem with 1/8 jacks ?The 1/4 jack is outdated by far, and the only reason it's still in use is that "everybody else use it".
It's not a problem getting cords that has a 1/8 jack in one end and 1/4 jacks at the other end.

Well, that's news to me. (good news if what you say is true) I know I can get cords with any configuration of plugs I want... that's not my issue.. but it seems like 1/4" is a better deal all around.. larger components, a more solid connection, more surface area for the electrical contacts.. much less prone to damage over the long term.. a separate cable for each stereo channel. Now, 1/4" might be outdated but you make it sound like mini jacks are somehow better? If they are I'd like to know why, I've just never heard anyone say that before. Anyone here agree with GB about mini jacks being good enough for day in and day out use over a long period of time? For my own peace of mind, I'd rather get something with jacks that are tried and true in all kinds of environments.

Cap, thanks for pointing me to the Echo Mia.. It looks like a kick ass option if the sblive and APS stuff doesn't turn out to be what I want. And CHEAP!

While my mind is on connectors... What's up with analog rca jacks and plugs? Are they considered to deliver acceptable quality for production?

That's right. Just don't want to waste money on junk that goes out in a month, you know? I think I'm all set with this thread, so thanks to everyone who gave me some advice.

RCA is better as there is an increased contact area. All the way around. Look into your 1/4" plug and you'll see only one small connection point.

i recommend a little salt in with the pasta to keep it from sticking together. you can always see if it's finished cooking by tasting it, or seeing if it will stick to the wall.
