Just to say, at the recent music live show, Cake's distributor was there demonstrating SONAR, and guess what card they had running WDM drivers at 5ms or so latency (I played it in realtime from a keyboard) - Yup!... the Hoontech DSP24/96 Value!

seems to work... That's good news!

5 ms? Man, I need like 2. Haven't we gotten there yet on the PC? I want live input monitoring, damnit!

the dsp3000 looks like a great interface. and it has the same converters found in the mytek 8x96. mic pre's with inserts after the pre for using outbourd comps and eq's. I am torn between it and the RME ADI-DS. I am glad to see the hoontech being showcased by Cakewalk. As you said, promising.

the hoontechs applet allows direct thru no-latency monitoring for those working with external hardware - You just route the virtual patch cables for the inputs from the IN direct to the OUT - the recording s/w takes a sniff and records off that feed.

well yeah, most cards have that. even my shitty yammie. But I want low-enough-latency software monitoring so I can use some realtime FX, ya know?

well you can use ADDITIVE fx with any low latency card on inputs, but I dont think using a s/w compressor insert etc is realistic on any of them. For that i prefer to use an outboard comp/pre

k- well it's feasible on pro-tools, and that what the native programs are really striving to be, audio-wise.

yeah but they wont I doubt, you need instant latancy for insert fx, it's way cheaper to just get a decent pre-amp/comp unit than spending loads on a ball-busting pc just to try to acheive that.

i can't beleive some one has made mention of PT twice and no one has come haze.

The point about instant latency is never going to be answered as long as the os is involved. If you want that so much, buy a used mix system.

Well Christian - for a budget like that you are well on target - a nice 2ghz athlon machine is about 400 quid for a basic unit, add a screen, a decent stereo card like audiohile or hoontech dsp24/96 value etc - add your s/w next & some VSTi stuff and you are rolling!!

check the ARTICLES section for some ideas, I'm, just finishing up the: 'Build a budget 2ghz music PC' article - that'll be ready by early december with a full instructions for the build, bios tweak/setup, and what have you - but you do need a pc-boffin mate to help if you are a 100% newbie I'd say just to be safe. It's always best to build your first PC with a knowledgeable freind on hand.

we built it a while back (say 3 months ago or so) but wanted to give it time before publishing the build to see if it continued to be reliable over some time, which it has.

if you have a basic midi & audio sequencer and add a good s/w sampler then you are fine, that will do your drums and other sounds, and you can use some cheap free VSTi's for your synths to et you going - don't think FREE is crap for VSTi/DXi synths, some of the freebies out there are phenomenal! and some are just cheap and cheerful but they all yeild good results with some added fx and other tweaks - certainly a system like that would set you up real good and give you years of learning and creating ability.

there is also tons of free plugin FX out there from stormingly good automatable filters, to compressors, reverbs, delays and a whole host of other types of fx.

really yyou are laughing if you just get a good fast cheap pc, a decent fast s/card & some sort of midi master keyboard and mebbe add some hardware control interface for tweaking your mixes and synth moves etc.

K is dead on. there are so many free vst and vsti apps out there and the fxpansion adapter for Sonar is only $49.
