hello,

i've got an asus a7v mobo with the via apollo kt133 chippset, 200mhz fsb pc133 dram. ok?

my question is can i put a thundebird 1.5ghz on it? i've looked at the asus site and it says the mobo will take athlon thunderbird / athlon duron 330 - 1000 mhz.

does that mean that it won't take durons over 1ghs only? or that it won't take either over 1ghz?

btw it says nothing in the mobo manual. i've emailed asus but no reply as yet. and btw i can overclock my processor up to 1.2 ghz but is there any point if the mobo won't take it?

cheers, bedwyr.

No idea Bedwyr... For what its worth, I shelled out around £90 for a newer 266A based board, supports DDR RAM, ATA100 and the newer, faster "Athlon XP" Palomino-core based CPUs (they run much cooler than a Thunderbird 1.5 which runs DAMN hot!)

Hope this helps..

it does sort of help, but i can get the 1.5ghz processor for a swap, & there's no point getting it if my mobo can't handle it. guess i'll have to wait for the asus reply.

If you end up getting the 1.5 in some kind of system, don't forget bollock loads of cooling (good thermal pasted and an "AMD approved" CPU fan is definately a recommendation, as well as making sure the VCore voltage on your mobo isn't set too high...)

The AMD list is here:

that's the A7V supported chips... the athalon 1500 is the MP chip and requires a different board supporting 266mhz fsb.

cheers k, i'll just overclock it for now then. 90 quid isn't much for a new mobo though.

what sort of temperature is safe to go to? and will 1200 be noticably better then 1ghz?

Hang on.. Isn't Bedwyr is talking about a Thunderbird 1.5GHz, not the AMD 1500 "?P" CPU (which would need the newer mobo right off the bat??)

The newer XP & MP AMD CPUs are based on a smaller more sophisticated core, run cooler, have full support for SSEII and other funky stuff..

I know with my TBird 1.4GHz, I was told a safe "ceiling" would be around 70-75C, though with decent cooling I've had mine running (under "load") at around 52-53C... these are VERY hot running CPUs though and at the limit of that particular manufacturing technology before AMD made the switch...

well, the t-bird only goes up to 1.4 with either a 200 or 266 fsb. 1.5 is a ?p thingy.

and the asus a7v isn't on the amd recommended list.

Ah.. if its definately one of the XP or MP range then you will need the newer boards..

Anything VIA266"A" based fer starters...

"EPoX8KHa+" (£101incVAT), "AsusA7V266-E" (£141incVAT) from www.overclockers.co.uk

(And of coz you'd get support for DDR mem, AGP4x, and UltraATA100...)

Not sure if that's the 188pin stuff... if it is, you should be fine.. but you'll certainly be losing the benefits of being able to run PC2100 DDR Ram on your system with that new Mobo...

All this PC malarkey eh?? Anyone wanna sell me a cheap Wavestation A/D and an EMU Morpheus?!?!????

Whoa!

cheers k.

marc, no, but do you wanna buy my sblive platinum piece of shit?

i'm sticking my new rode ntk through two channels of behringer compression at full gain (no preamp) and still it's way less noisy than the mic input on the bslive.
