well, I just found out why Im getting mad clicks and pops in my recordings:

2 PCI slots, one of them is of course shared by the AGP video card on my shitty MoBo...

sharing the same IRQ with the soundcard. Cant change the IRQs in the bios as far as I can tell..Ive tried. Tried swapping the delta66 PCI with my adaptec 2940 and that just froze the system because then the drive is fighting with video.

anything I can do besides buy a new mobo? argh

Influx, usually one slot does share resources with the AGP port. Put your modem in that one. Put your sound card and SCSI card in other ports. You'll probably have to experiment.

but hes only got 2 pci slots.......

I`m the last person to give advice on these sort of things but do you have any spare ISA slots in there Dave? Might be worth dropping the pci scsi card in favour of an ISA so you can have the delta on the decent pci slot. I use an ISA right here, cost about 15-20 quid and it works fine.

Course, if you`re running a scsi internal HD for audio recording the slower ISA buss might make that idea a bad one.

yup. 2 PCIs. pass on the ISA as Im trying to get this set up as a DAW.

crap. I really doubt theres any way around this except to get goin on the new mobo.

If you're using a mobo with 2 PCI and the rest ISA you really should look at a new motherboard.. What kind of CPU is it? P-II 350-ish, right? You should get off cheap

yeah yeah, craig. I get the point. Actually its a celeron 433

as for drives..Im under the impression that IDE work fine now, but I already own 2 scsi 7200rpm drives, one 4 gig and one 9. Why would I go buy new drives?

I take it you`re not asking me, but anyway - piece of shit p2-350 on a mobo virtually no one has ever heard of before, and for good reason I guess. Its a siemens which is an apt name because the things a total pile of wank.

I seem to remember folk here saying that an athlon/duron with an abit mobo or something is the way to go for DAWs on a budget but then I did buy this piece of crap so you`d do well to ignore any advice no matter how well intended.

blimey! - only 2 pci slots?.. thats a bit crap - did you get that amd kit then in the end influx? - i'd dump the scsi drives and go ata100 myself.

no..didnt get the AMD yet. still kinda thinkin around a bit

the 2 pci thing is a JOKE. Its an old compaq OEM machine, and me being naive I didnt even know to think about that stuff

Im actually lookin at an ASUS CUSL2/PIII combo as well...

so why would I drop teh decent scsi card, 4 and 9 gig drives taht I already have, and go spend more money on IDE?

cois 80gb of ata100 ibm drive is 145 quid and will be faster than your old tired scis disks, and you'll NOT have bus probs with the adaptec. seel the drives and card and that'll pay for the chip/board, then just get a case, use your old screen etc...

just picked me up an ASUS CUSL2 with a celeron 533 and 128 megs included for $170. think Ill go that route

Id need the scsi card still anyway for sample transfers

the less restructuring I do the better, tell the truth. Im not the most patient of sorts. ask horizens
