tired of highlighting and copying parts across to make longer passages of repeating patterns on a track?

highlight the part you want to copy - click CTRL + K

then double click the 'number of copies' box, and to create say a noice 16 bar section from a 1 bar loop, type '15' - hey presto!

ghost copies just means they are releated to the original, and thus if you change the original the copies also change.

here's another way that I find handy:

if you want to make multiple copies of a part up to a certain point in the song, but you don't know how many copies to make, you can just use the pencil tool....

click-and-hold on a part with the pencil tool near the top of the part (just like do when you want to LENGTHEN the part) and hold down ALT at the same time.... now, keep the ALT and mouse button down and drag far far to the right to the point where you want the repeats to stop...

when you let go of the button - PRESTO! that part is repeated as many times as will fit into the area you selected....

hold down CTRL to get ghost b parts.....

peace

alright...

say you have a part that is 16 bars long
starting at bar 1. hold down [Alt] and cut the
part at bar 2 with the scissors tool. the part will
be split up into equal parts, depending on
where you cut it. also works with audio parts.

kewl.

got another one...

quick way to move notes in the edit window or
parts in the arrange window without using the
mouse.

not sure what it is for PC (control maybe?), but
for mac users:

[Command] + Left/Right arrow button moves
all selected notes one snap value to the
right/left

[Command] + Up/Down arrow transposes all
selected notes one semitone up/down

[Command] + [Shift] + Up/Down arrow
transposes all selected notes one octave
up/down

pretty fast way of editing

Hey, quick questions....

What's a good way to record a snare roll with increasing volume and/or volocity? I'm using a Yamaha CS2X midi out and thru returned with VST. Can I do this on my main drum track? Or does it have to be its own track where I edit the volume in the controller editor?

Also why does the midi bank / program change message in the beggining of my drum track sometimes not make the CS2X play that sound? It seems like it works sometimes and other times not. I am playing the song from 1.1.0 so the message is being sent....(and nothing changed on the yamaha)

I know the last question's a little in depth, so email me if you like (or if you have a fat dance/techno or hip-hop track to share).
studioproductions@yahoo.com
Thanks

c, for your first question, you probably
shouldn't use volume if there are other parts
on the same channel. velocity is the way to go
since you can isolate the drum that you are
working with. you can either draw the notes in,
drag them to the end of the part and then ramp
the velocity - or - make another track with just
the drum roll and then place this part on the
same track as the rest of the drums and then
glue them together.

don't really know why that's happening with
your program changes

hey C. do you know how to use drum-maps?... checkout the Cubase page in PCWARE /SWARE - search for 'cubase' or load the selection 'Midi & hard disk' there's an explanation of how to use the drum maps and it's theory in there - drum maps is what you want son !

also - newbies - are you aware you can make your master keyboard keys become the VST transport buttons?.. you can make the top 5 keys you dont play allocated to stop, play, record etc etc then you can drop in when playing and drop out etc anytime without having to go to the pc keyboard at all!.

Hi K
Is all that stuff just for Cubase5 or can i set-up my Phat Boy in 3.7 too?

? Anyone know if i can get the cursor to go to the same place from one arrange window to another?
I usually start a new song at the end of the old, then i make a new arrangement in the Song so i can scroll back to bar one etc.
But i was trying to go from the new arrangement back to the old just to paste new bits in etc,but i,m not sure if i can just go from Bar 1 to say 249 ??
Bit confusing that sorry.

Cheers John.

this stumped me for a while..

drawing controllers directly into the edit mix window.

hold down left-alt and use the pencil tool to draw in the controllers, the resolution is determined by the snap setting at the top (ie 1/16, 1/32, etc)

yeah simple eh? you wouldn't believe how much I struggled to suss that one out.

FOLDER TRACKS.... on an empty track go to the column where you make the track a drum-track or midi track etc etc... choose FOLDER TRACK... then grab ANY tracks you like (click-hold the actual track header row whete the track title is written, as if you are grabbing it to move it up/down & re-order it's position in the vertical stack)... then drag the track up and drop it onto the created folder track header... hey presto... open/close the FOLDER track using the little +/- button to show/hide the contents.... great for organising screen clutter.

as for if cubase5 is better..well...it has more features thats for sure, and the midi is supposed to be tighter

no they are not, folder tracks work with all types of tracks. Remote transport is via the KEY-COMMANDS setup page.

Something I do with the folder tracks is to divide them up to match the groups I have set up. ie. Folder Track "Drums" (all of the imported Fruity Loops drums divided up into individual sounds, normally 8-10 individual tracks), Folder Track "Vocals", Folder Track MIDI (with all the original instruments in case I need to do edits and rerecord as audio, Folder Track "Guitars" etc etc. This works a treat and keeps your screen much more manageable. Especially when you start to go above the 8 tracks of audio/16 tracks of midi on the arrange page.

sox
