can you give me a model number or something? My company here has a bunch of 1u rack servers from Compaq. Pretty tight inside, from what I have seen, and it looks like there's VERY little room for an PCI cards.

Dell has them too, and we have a couple.
They've been solid so far...

Looking at the one I just pulled up it'd
be a sweet system too: 18GB 10k RPM
SCSI drive, 800 mhz CPU, 256 MB of
RAM... $1700 (educational pricing, so
your price may vary)

Snipped from Dell:

Should mention that's for Linux
(cheaper), and you'll need to come up
with the OS on your own.

---Compac makes really good servers... weird huh?.
You'd think that the worst home pc company in the world (short of gateway, and maybe nec, but then again they got bought by compac) wouldn't be able to do anything in the server market but i know that they are running just as reliable as our poweredge boxes. still no as-400 though
we have been using about 9 rack mounted compacs to run the telephony vlan at work and we haven't had a single problem... yet.

Well, I'm looking at a Compaq ProLight DL360. Dual processor, raid card w/ 2 hd's that mirror eachother. 1 unit server. Expensive. Our PC tech says some people think it's crap (didn't elaborate) but he finds they work good. We've got a bunch of them. What other info are you looking for?

i just wondered how they ventilated them, i wondered if they were quiet... i thought it might make a good rack-PC for music assuming it'll take a PCI device or two

K- our compacs are very quiet and they do not get that much air and it has never caused a problem. We keep about 3 stacked ontop of eachother in a glass server case and it is never any warmer then the room its in.tino

Ahhh. Well, there's two PCI slots in the back, horizontal-like. Don't know what you can put in 'em, though. There's 4 DIMM spots at a 45 degree angle. VERY LOUD fans. I see ventilation on the top from 4 areas, and from the back there's a couple of openings. I sit right across from the PC tech who has one in his cube. I can't hear SHITE when I'm on the phone. I've repeatedly asked to either move the server or move me because I can't work when it's on. You know, being the audio guy and all. Even my nice headphones don't help much. My recommendation is DON'T get one unless you can stick it in another room.

The Dells can be bought in 1U high
rackmountable form, k... They are deep
though... Much deeper than any audio
equipment. Is that what you're asking?

-Craig

PS sorry for fucking up the HTML.

I don't know. As far as the Dell stuff
goes, I'm sure I could find out pretty
much anything you wanted about them
since we do have a State Contract with
Dell they tend to say how high when we
say jump

The ones we have are 2u high. I believe
they can be ordered up to 4-way. Not
sure about price. Let me do some digging.

The 2u chassis supports 2 CPUs, $2570
gets you a dual P-III 733, 256MB RAM,
18GB SCSI hard disk. 4-way boxes have
all sorts of shit you probably don't
want to pay for, like SCSI backplane,
etc... They are fucking expensive. You
can get an 8-way box from them if you've
got sick cash (and 8u of rack space).

They don't exactly make the servers for
deranged, power-hungry musicians ;-)

Good point k, the amount of stuff you can do on a decent spec pc, nobody should bitch about the price....
I'm not sure you need server spec hardware for audio though, unless mebbe you are running a commercial studio, in which case the reliability factor would make it worth shelling out for the redundant power supplies, extra fans, raid adapters, drool drool, I'm getting excited now. I need to get out more....btw we use compaq proliant servers at work, they do seem to be very dependable, but their desktops are shite. Another thing - we just odered some new racks for the proliant stuff - they are 800 quid a go !!!

I suppose you're right but the economics
of scale don't hold up past 2-way
boxes.. You don't need Ultra-SCSI3
backplanes with hot-swappable RAID
arrays. It'll cost you $20k minimum for
an 8-way box, when you could be saving
yourself like $8k of that by ditching
the backplane/RAID stuff, fibrechannel
interfaces, etc...

What you really want is a
workstation-class machine that
rackmounts, not really a server..

Hmm... Maybe one of those SGI boxes?
They're only two processor though..

Well, since you asked, I surfed back on
over to Dell.com... A 4-way P-III Xeon
700mhz system with 1GB of RAM, two 18GB
10k RPM SCSI drives will cost you
$14,299. It fits in 4u of rack space.

The 8 way box with the same specs is
$33,727
