I use an ata100 7200 and at 48 tracks, i am doing 25%. I do use many long clips though. If your clips are short they do lighten the disk load.

i got one server case with 3 older ata33 drives, scsi via a 2940 u/w wired to a jaz external. that's networked to a twin drive ata66 box with two 20gb drives and a cd burner (tdk) - There's an NT4 server box also but it's down right now with a sick power supply.

The duron 700 is ata100 drive & 133 bus/ram... single 20gb drive, but it's being updated with a cd burner at christmas.

K, no you guys all read that right the first time. it's an ATA-33 (not 133) drive. Formatted with 64k clusters in two partitions. The other day I was working on a 50 track mix with about 12 plugins of various types. 40% CPU, 35% disk.

It's a bread and butter Gateway Select 700mhz Athlon with 1/2GB of RAM.

I shit you not

I'm also talking about 16-bit, 44.1khz mono tracks! If you're thinking I'm getting 48 stereo tracks of 24-bit, 96khz audio then that would be pretty unbelievable

seriously, ignore the ata numbers... drive rpm and actual transfer rates are the only things that really matter. even the fastest drives can barely get sustained transfers above 33 M/s.

these days even a cheap ass $100 staples special 5400 rpm ata 33 drive will wipe the pants off old scsi drives.

of course i have about double that with ide raid - never actually tried to max out my tracks but i'll go give it a whirl.

hmm.. big clusters eh.. you used the z/ switch then?

so have to tried setting the ram chunksize the same for your swapfile in your system.ini file? - i'd be interested if it changes anything.
