I saw this article:
http://www.harmony-central.com/News/2001/Cakewalk-Pentium-4.html

Is Sonar really optimized for P-4s? I was planning to get an Athlon XP...

well it doesnt say much... do they just mean it is 'optimised' for the 2 ghz p4's longer pipeline (Hyper Pipelined Technology) against lower ipc ? (instructions per clock) - arggggggh!... it never ends does it!! - currently the p4's run at 100mhz X 20 to give 2ghz, but the new chips will probably push up to 133mhz so even a p4 2ghz now wont be the same as a potential p4 in a years time ... and then by them what'll amd have at the table?... eek!! - it'll do equivilent to a 400mhz fsb now cos the quad thing - but raise the fsb to 133 and that'd give 533 (pc1066)...... anyways, apparently that wont happen till 2002 anyways...

sigh... and we are left with the age old question... will it make that much diffrence?.. is the CURRENT p4 any much 'more' than an AMD upper-end processor with or without optimsed s/w.... is the cakewalk announcement a marketting ploy ? (albeit not a desceptive one, but simply to take advantage of a certain vibe that 'pentium' is stabler or whatever for pc audio)

on the Steinberg web site, they have always recomended pentium over AMD saying the same rated chips run faster and more stable from intel's pentium. Also stating that celerons were not relaly a good idea either. Of coarse that was two years ago and the K7's are pretty strong.

Check out www.sharkyextreme.com: They've benchmarked the high-end Athlons against the P4's in different types of processor intensive applications, including audio. The Athlons come in just ahead of the P4's in almost everything....
