OK...just got me a 17" flat screen YAY...

thing is...I have an older diamond viper 4meg AGP...and

the display on the flat screen FLICKERS a bit, and doesnt look as clear as it otta. I dont see anything about minimum requirements for the screen, but is this card not gonna cut it?

dont laugh at the specs on the card  it worked fine for just running cubase and all that. I dont play games or anything like that...

thanks

refresh rate 60hz (recommended)

resolution is the high one...1280x1-24 is it? its the highest the monitor supports...

didnt try that. well..I tried the next one down...forgot what it was...and it seemed to do the same

its not really "crapping out"...the image stays intact..it just...flickers slightly...or...wavers might be a better word....the edges of images (noticed it mostly on wave images in Cubase SX) seem blurred and wavering...

make sense?

"refresh rate 60hz (recommended)"

Is that recommended by the LCD or the vid card or windows? blurred in color, or does it look like it's wrapping? Is it wavering like little waves down the side of your screen?

I'm not sure if the answer to these questions will help, but it sounds like a video sync issue. Are the colors alright? Text sharp and stuff? are you able to center the image on the screen and fill it to the bezel? Are you using one of those analog to digital convertors, or does the LCD have an analog in?

What kind of LCD, btw?

heh... ok, i'll stop asking questions

just try the lowest res and refresh rate and color depth and see if it works well. If it does, up the refresh rate until it doesn't. Then up the resolution, color as needed. I just wanna HELP!

never knew it could be so ing complicated!

the 60hz is the rec'd by the monitor.

screen seems fine. centers fine. seems fairly clear altho some text is a bit blurry...

guess I will experiment with it. was thinking I just needed a new card...(especially since bedwyr's is TWICE as good as MINE!)

Influx, you should get at least an 8Meg card just so you can run the thing at a decent colour depth... I know SX complains if you try and run at 16bit, not that 32bit colour is strictly necessary but on a good display it does have some effect..

Also it seems odd that the LCD only supports upto 60Hz (funnily enough that's the refresh rate that allegedly the most people seem to respond to with headaches and stuff) - anyway, a newer card (needn't be expensive) is likely to have a faster RAMDAC enabling you to have higher refresh rates or at the very least, very stable locked refresh rates at the ones supported by your screen...

Just a thought..

yeah, video cards are commodities nowadays. $32 will get you a modern video card with 64 MB of memory.

Of course there's lots of research to be done on the subject.

There is an XP bug with some AGP cards where the refresh rate keeps dropping to 60hz your monitor should be able to handle much higher. Have you tried just changing it ?

Get yourself a cheap GEForce MX or ATI card with at least 32MB ram. YOu can pick them up for less than £80. Many of them also have DVI out which will mean you can have a direct digital connection to your LCD, makes configuring much simpler.

Yeah.. ATI Radeon 7500 VE here. I think I paid $120 at Best Buy for it. You can probably get it a bit cheaper, but I was in a hurry to play GTA3

see now youre all starting to suggest things that are designed for games

I dont play games. EVER and never will.

thinkin a matrox G550. Might want to go dual head some day....

I didnt say 60hz was all it would do  and the resolution will go higher, too...just my card wont support it

will switch. was just wondering.

another thing thats happening is that in SX when I zoom in on the project page, at a certain zoom depth it sorta stutters, and each subsequent zoom takes WAY too long to refresh...

argh

I thought your screen could do better than 60Hz.., so its basically your 4mb card that isn't cutting it any more!!

Yep, those other cards suggested WILL play games well, but the "2D" display features of those cards are also so good now that even if you never play a single game, the card will do the job!

Matrox G550 is a damn fine card, and the dual head is nice but its no better or worse than any of the cards the guys have mentioned (and if anything its a little pricey for what it *DOES* offer - here in the uk at any rate.. you got a world of choice out there, just take yer pic!

Go for it Dave. I'll be laughing at the $150 I saved

Seriously, it's a good card for music apps. Plenty fast, stable drivers, hasn't messed up my rig, and it has all the dual-head features of the Matrox card.

i would go for a 64MB dual head with a solid rep for stable drivers (easy enough to find on user forums). Nothing more nothing less.

The G400 is fine too.. I can't remember whether Matrox do a unified driver file as well.. if so, chances are any latest downloads from their site will have the latest (most stable) drivers for that card too.

For music stuff, a safe bet is to go for any card you know to do the following:

1. Mature drivers, support for 98SE,2000,XP
2. Fast ramdac (300MHz or better)
3. Min 16MB RAM (For supporting higher colour depths at higher resolutions)
4. AGP

He's right, but you do want enough megs so you can get decent colour depths at high resolutions...

i only recommended 64MB because that's almost the starting point nowadays. Sure, you save like $20 for a 32-meg card, but I don't consider that a smart discount.

Do you guys run at 32, 24, or 16-bit color depth? I've never noticed a performance difference between them, but I keep reading that you should stay at 16 for audio. Anyone notice a performance diff?

Not on my monster nope!
32 bit all the way baby!
In fact, SX and Wavelab kinda complain if you DON'T run in 24bit or higher...

anyone know a card with dual head and s-video out as well. Or a decent single head with s-video. I am buying a new card this week cause my my studio and bedroom are now the same room. So my 46' tv at the end of my bed is now my computer monitor temporarily.

you know what, lots of people will say get the latest drivers from the company, but I say if it works, stick with it. XP is known for being pretty good with its standard drivers, and the performance gain from switching would be really hard to notice. Only d/l and install the latest drivers if you're experiencing a problem that could be driver-related.

I found myself in a jam when I was on the road working when I needed to buy a monitor, and i almost flipped for the flat screen. I ended up buying a cheap $100 17" and I am sick of the scan lines after using the laptop. The LCD is so much easier on the eyes.
My buddy spent $900 on his sony. It's huge though. I think I am going to do it and get a couple.

Thanks influx on the card offer and advice, but I have always used pc. The G550 looks good.
