Hi

I downloaded a demo of Sonar from the Cakewalk website and tried it out. What I could not figure out was if it was able to play VST Instruments. There was no documentation for it so I guess not. Perhaps somebody with a bit more experience could help me out.

Also, DX instruments where as I understood set up in the effect section in audio tracks. How do you play them without midi connection??

Thanks in advance..

Look it up in the help, Cake's DXi implementation is wierd. You insert the DXi into the effects section of an audio track, and then use a seperate MIDI track to drive it.

As far as VST synths, there are several wrappers out there that enable you to use VSTi's as DXis, but Sonar doesn't support them natively.

I've never bothered to check but Sonar might have a virtual keyboard that works as an internal self-contained midi keyboard. I just looked. It's called the Virtual Piano. You don't need an external midi device. You can use the virtual piano to drive the dxi and vst synths.

I should add that I haven't tried it. Give it a go. Choose a synth in the effects box of an audio track, create a midi track and choose that synth as the output for that midi track.
