ok, I have a vaugue idea of what bus speed is (speed at which info travels around on the mobo), but am unsure how much difference it makes.

example: two machines

1) 800 MHZ with 100MHZ system bus

2) 800 MHZ with 133MHZ system bus

will there be a dramatic difference in performance for audio?

i wouldn't say 'dramatic' & there are many other factors, but it should yeild a bit more tracks/processes yes providing all the other components are also high speed such as the drive (ata100).

yeah, there's certain areas where you take more of a performance hit than others. Like k said, HD performance is a biggie. Processor speed's another. That's where you'd get your "dramatic" boosts.

I use a PIII 800mhz 100mhz bus, and from talking to other users with the 133 bus and ram they do get more fx and tracks.

They should... Bus speed is pretty much the speed at which things move from subsystem to subsystem in the PC.. So you can move more stuff from disk or memory to the cpu in a given amount of time.

But like k and Damballah said, there are other factors. Chances are your machine isn't stuffing the whole bus anyways..

If you're buying a new motherboard and CPU though, it's definately something to consider.

I guess for softsynths, which do not involve the HD, bus speed would be a more important consideration than it would for track count, right?
