I've heard a lot of blurb about the AWE64 being a fairly good midi synth but for recording it is shit (mainly due to lack of shielding on card and crappy mic pre-amps designed for little fisher-price mics). I have also read a lot of information on improving these with a little circuitry - is this true? Another alternative is to buy a pre-amp for the mic - is this a viable option (ie how much are they and where from?) or should I just jump ship and sell my leg to get something like the £200 guillemot card?

One option is to pick-up a Mackie board (say 1202VLZ). You'll get 4 top notch mic-pre amps (and 4 stereo channels) and the output is DEAD quiet. I got one for $275.00 US. Only use it for drums now but I'll never get rid of it.
