Hey K,
Can you put up the grid? I'm trying to develop some Todd Edwards/UK Garage grooves and I need some guidance. Drum programming's a bitch!

cant do it cos of the swing factor - just open the beat in your midi drum editor

dunno, its a standard midifile.. kik = c1, snare = d1, hats = f#1 & a#1 - and there is a rimshot on the same as the snare

well basically the template file i added has the typical basic garage swing groove which you can then load and make a groove template from in your sequencer, sure tho, there are lots of variations in garage but in essence they all got that swing groove -- the sounds you use to play that file make alot of difference to the sound too...

yes k,can you explain the swing groove 4 us ...i can see the beats are spread over 8 bars and every 2 bars the next to bars start early (i think)by how much?then the next to bars?.....how did u work this out ..and how do different styles vary.ie house ,d&b.if i like a particular tune the beats and that how do i figure out swing factor 4 myself.

it's more a case of getting it to sound right.. see, any groove template is pretty mutch a guidline.. you may need to pull and push notes around slightly to get the rythm to sound good.

all sort of things will affect the groove.. envelope settings, velocities, sound frequencies.. simply chucking on a groove is just the beginning of a labour of love..

a groove template doesnt contain notes at all, it's just a quantise template... i mean it's only a starting point, garage has gone along way there's so much beats and variations

sorry, yes i looked and i translated the file into a midifile and it seems to have lost something in the translation.... i tell you tho, we were busting some massive garage today tho me and my kid & his mate. besides - the bassline is sooooo important cos garage is like a cross, so the bassline is critical. it's the signature of the track almost

What about the Wookie style of beat, he seems to be the man of the moment. He seems to use vey little quantise..... nice feel, but hell to mix.

Any tips on this or any other forms of 2 step beats?

um... well, i'm not too much into making garage, i'll do it mainly if i'm working with someone else, but um... i like to get into the bassline early before the drums are even starting to develop, perhaps just add a hat pattern then the bassline, and especially using portamento switch on the squarewave bassline so that some parts of the bassline are on slide and some not, to get some 'slidey' bassline parts. also, if u use vst, NEON synth makes a great little basic square wave bassline synth to get you going.

Here is a basic 2 step beat ala Y Tribe, the second kick should be just a fraction before the third.... (Flam)

of course it's all in the sounds you use.....

From this most 2 step can be built..... add a few more kicks or snares to suit.

here's another garage beat - if you want you can take it, chop it in half and reverse the order of the kiks by putting the two bits in a different order.

here's the beat to 'Flowers' - um... i had to work a compromise, cos in the track, it sounds like there is 3 hats in action a closed, a half-open, and a full open hat with a clipped deacy (possibly clipped as i've done it with another closed hat note which is rstricting the open-hat decay - anyways, just bare in mind the hat pattern is a compromise although the riddim is the same it could be worked on further - but hey, these beats are to grab and adapt really, not to just lift and use. - enjoy

here's the 'flowers' beat - the hats i added are a bit of a compromise, the pattern is right, but i think they are using 3 hats in the track or a open hat sample with a variable decay, whereas i used just two hats, open & closed - so use it as a template to adapt.
