I recently got in to producing some kind of downbeat/trip-hop music.

The song I am currently working on is needing some of the military march type snare rolls that can be found on the portishead song "mysterions". I have tried to recreate the beat but it only sounds stiff and wrong. The snare rolls get to static and it sounds more like 10 snares playing very fast then one snare roll. I usually dont have any problems doing the beats I want but this one just sounds wrong. Please help me.

I don't have an answer but...

EXCELLENT QUESTION!

I have toyed with this for a while and I have not been able to do it...maybe you just need a real drummer or a good sample for stuff like that...I'm sure it can be done, though. You probably just need a few different samples from the same drum with varying velocities (instead of just varying the velocity of one, static sample) and some great quantizing work.

Think about the physics of what's going on with a snare drum during a roll and it starts to make sense why a shitload of individual hits strung together doesn't sound the same. You're probably gonna need to sample one. If you wanna program one, keep in mind that the velocity is very much different from what you'd want on an individual, punchy snare hit. The drummer never developes that kind of stick velocity. You also lose a lot of the individual attacks. Maybe program it so when they're played legato, you're not retriggering the attack portion of the amp envelope. Also the snares themselves never settle down, so you get that rising rattle separate from what's going on at the top head. Good luck.

I managed to program a nice loose snare pattern recently, took me a bloody age pulling and pushing the notes about and playing with the velocities until it sounded nice.. I'll post it up if I remember tommorow.

works well as a groove template for sequencers as well.

i've found that no amount of programming can beat a sampled roll... so i'd advise finding one. then again, i might just suck.

That's why I love the MPC. The note repeat botton in combinatuion with the velocity sensitive pads make it much easier to program rolls and fills in general

he he, the MPC is untouchable 4 drums methinks. Being able 2 get yer hats 2 cancel eachother out is a big plus too..........as is being able 2 fuck around with individual hits filtering, attack and decay from the step edit page.

swing quantise is nice 4 shuffles and stuff too - but why the hell dont akai advertise these points? I don`t understand, u go 2 their website and they make virtually no mention of these things, its crazy. U speak 2 any confirmed user and they`re always the things they covet the most about this box but akai don`t ven seem 2 b aware of it   Pimilk - its the akai mpc - a HW sequencer/samplingdrumbox with some drumpads, a much maligned machine by those that dont know.

Ok errrrr........sorry, on with the snare rolls.

to copy a loops 'rythm groove' in logic, open the audio editor.. load in your loop and then in one of the menu's at the top there is a 'groove machine' option..

in there.. you can set the sensitivity etc..

Tried all kind of diffrent tricks but i dont seem to get further. I am going for the chopped drumloop approach. One problem i have is to find a good drum loop, alla trip hop loops on the internet more sound as downpitched hip-hip loop or the funky drummer break. Anyone know were to get a rolling trip-hop drum loop filled with stepping snares?

Yeah,

try buying a couple of records from Chuck Mangione. He features the sickest Jazz drum solos on most of his songs. Full of fills, rolls, and everything in between. Sampled him many times. Great stuff if you are looking for insane drumming.

Peace

I haven't heard that song either but I have made some killer sounding drum rolls by manualy programing in 128th notes slightly offset from the reast of the beat. 128th notes can add a really freaky human touch to your rhythms

A lot of DnB and trip-hop, and bigbeat use Recycled drum loops. They are loops sliced into individual hits within Recycle, a Steinberg product. The groove and feel as well as tempo can be shifted. This gives the drums a strange unnatural sound that can't be created with a straight loop or individual hit strung togethter with a sequencer. The reason is because the ghost of one hit may be carried over to another and when the loop is stretched or shortend these artifacts change the sound of the loop because of gaps or overlaps respectivly. recycle CD roms are cheap and full of good patterns of all styles. Also REX files work in Cubase flawlesly, but to create your own you would need to buy Recycle.Recycle also supports many samplers and will generate a preset for the sampler, and a midi file for the sequencer to play the file back.
