how do you go about picking out the sounds that you would use in a drum track and making them more coherent in the mix?

the tried and tested approach of 'see if it sounds good'
and then messing with the eq to get em to fit around the main sounds in the track.

changing their pitch sometimes helps too, as does treating the sounds to some kind of global process like a filter or summing in an efx box......
