Where are you located? You could try...

http://www.komplett.co.uk

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/

I'm in Ireland, and Komplett is so much cheaper than anywhere else. Overclockers have loads of silent fans, aluminium cases, etc, though I think they're slightly more expensive.

There are plenty of good motherboards around, though if you're getting the XP2400 I'd get one of the new nForce 2 boards, which are getting great reviews everywhere. I've got an Abit KT7A RAID board for my 1.4Ghz and it's grand, though when I can spare the cash I'll get an nForce.

Si.

Go for tried and tested components over bleeding edge shit. You're after a machine that doesn't crash, and if you have to sacrifice a little bit of performance then so be it.

Yes, supposedly they'll offer some distinct advantages. But there may be hangups. The memory bus is unlike any other board that I know of. Sound and video are integrated - this can be a major pain in the ass if the BIOS isn't written intelligently. It's a new chipset and probably it hasn't been fully sorted yet. I would look at this option with extreme care.

When the Athlons first came out, I bought one of the earliest systems. I may have actually had the first one on DT   It was over a year before I found a card that would work with my early motherboard.

Lesson learned. Use stuff you know will work.

www.newegg.com

never did me wrong

and I would STRONGLY advise against buying any "latest greatest" stuff...

be wise and let others be the beta testers while YOU get work done

that's why i keep recommending the humble, reliable, old ECS K7S5A. Would someone fucking please take my recommendation?

well you guy are true about the bleeding edge crap but... the new NFORCE boards rock.. whatever you guys say.. they are going to work fine... I already read reviews that used stress tests on the boards ( running it with bunch of apps and aceesing the drives etc. for a looooooong time nonstop) Plus the integrated video is what makes this thing really cool, it comes with dual outputs so yo can hook up 2 screens which I really like. AND you can get them without the videocard... and they perform better then anything else out there I would strongly reccomend it...
for the case...
If you want all in one silent PC .. checkout the Shuttle XPC... its a super small form factor pc case that comes with the the motherboard the powersupply and the fan already installed... really cool barebones setup. it has 3 firewire and 6 usb connestions, built in ethernet (gigabit with the nforce setup)... the downside is.. its small.. so you cant expand it it has room for 1 pci card and 1 agp slot, plus room for 1 cdrom drive 1 floopy(or HD) (and one hd)... MY friend just built one for himself (p4) and its fucking quiet! and silent.. It sel for 300$ which kinda seams oer priced but then if you tried to get an aluminum case, a silent fan and a silent PSU it might cost you more.
here is the link
http://www.shuttle.com/new/
check out the SFF platform...
The nforce chipset ones are not on the list but there is an article somewhere on the website... They should be already out... think they are waiting for the nforce parts...or something... errr. yeah.

yeah, I don't get the break system here, you can always do < /br > at the end of your line (without the spaces, of course) to get it to enter to the next line. Usually 'enter' will suffice, but not always. Is there some algorithm we can refer to, k?

I got the Asus A7V333 mobo for the Athlon XP2000 system like K's, and I'm pretty darn thrilled with everything so far. Playback in various audio apps continues while I load new files, it all runs so very nicely. Now I need new monitors, you know how it goes.
