is latency on modern multi i/o soundcards low enough nowadays to actually use them to apply effects to incoming signals? i know you'll always get SOME latency but i was wondering if this was workable with one of the better modern cards

When i switched to my MOTU 2408 (the original version even, mind you), my latency dropped to a solid 1.5 ms. I can pile on lots of effects at that buffer setting and not really notice any latency that would be too distracting for a proper performance. The hardware is definitely up to snuff nowadays, especially with a faster computer... mine is only an 1800!

yes, for adding ADDITIVE fx, such as delay, chorus flanging or delay, even a high latency of 20ms or so will work. For insert type fx which the sound passes THRU 100%, a lower latency is needed. I can run my hoontech for example at about 512 buffers which gives 5ms latency. That is not as low as it'll go, it'll go lower. But anyways, on 5ms latency I can use for example IK Multimedia's 'AmpliTube' guitar amp/cab sim' s/w and play thru it and hear modern hi-gain sound out the other end... there is a slight, fractional delay but the not really noticeable any worse than playing a gig.

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
