hey guys.

i have another boring gear question for you guys   See I'm looking for a sampler and I'm just so confused now. There's so many!

I planned on doing the waveform editing in soundforge and then doing some sort of scsi link to the sampler of which I hopped would have some effects and filters (good ones). Also I hoped the effects/filters could be controlled realtime either onboard or via controller.

The esi32's sounded like it might do the trick but i keep hearing how their effects/filters (via the expansion) aren't really thaaat good. I mean, only some are usuable (or have i confused this with another sampler?)

Anyway, so I looked into the Akai s2000 which seemed perfect -if it had the expansions. But then I stumbled upon the s3000/3200/3200XL/3000XL and now i'm just confused as to which ones do what.

Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated! I've always gotten help from you in the past hehehe..

pre-ps: I would like to grab this (used of course) around 500cdn which might be ridiculous, but the absolute ceiling is 1000cdn.

Thanks again!
-j

not too sure of the Akai lineage...

BUT...

Do yourself a favor, look at a used Yamaha A3000... Dirt cheap, tons of memory, awesome effects, great filters (16 I think, or more). 2 step keymapping, sample parameters (filters, effects bus, midi channel, keymapping, etc) assigned per sample... meaning different parameters per sample on the same channel etc...

It's a killer best happy sampler for you to make a smile!!!

hmm...
ic i c ic what you mean about that yamaha.

lemme ask you tho (cause i've been reading some stuff on harmony-central): what's up with the slow transfer? Isn't scsi supposed to be fast?

yeah yeah... The SCSI IS a little on the slow side, can't pretend to know why. Still faster that serial or parallel, I've never complained about the speed. And the CPU moves quick enough from function to function...

And I load whole new performances (samples, settings, etc) during my live set. Doesn't take but a few seconds...

honestly, the yamaha A series are the only ones with FX worth mentioning. Even the RFX upgrade in the Emu Ultra series is..well...vanilla.

personally, Ive always used outboard FX, but kinda always wanted to try out a yamaha

yeah i think i might just go outboard if they don't cut it since the yamaha might be cheap enough.

and then i could use the same board for my guitar :D

incidentaly, the yamaha works as an outboard effects processor as well. you can route the audio inputs throught the effects blocks just like an internal sample, and still use it as a sampler at the same time.

Best sampler ever... really.

I dunno' man. Very nice sampler indeed, but i had the k2000 for awhile, and as a sampler, I think the Yamaha still goes that extra step or two!

well if we're talking "get the samples in and play em" sampler, then pretty much anything is better than the Kurzweil. It's a beastie to set up keymaps and such, but I was really talking about V.A.S.T. programming in general. Perhaps the filters aren't quite as sweet, but they are incredibly flexible.

Totaly... And I'm not "really" arguing with you, the Kurzweil is one of the deepest architectures around... but, overall, I like the Yamy more, for ease of use, yes... and the sheer programability and diversity of the system.
