This is the system I am considering upgrading to:

Gigabyte GA-8PE800 ULTRA MoBo

Intel Pentium 4 / 2.53GHz 533MHz CPU

CORSAIR XMS 512MB 32MX8 PC-2700C2PT memory

LSI Logic ULTRA 160 SCSI Host Adapter PCI Card

AHANIX EX110 (BLACK) MID-TOWER PC CASE

WD WESTERN DIGITAL 40GB 8MB 7200RPM (audio) DRIVE

Maxtor 120GB 8MB 7200RPM (system) Drive

ENERMAX EG365P-VE(FMA). 350W Power supply

MATROX G550 Dual Head Video Card

ANTEC 80mm 4 pin Sleeve Bearing Fan.

I'll use my monitors (14 & 15 inch) from my 486 and P1 computers which will finally be scrapped.

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on these components for building a PC DAW around?

what else are you gonna be running on it? coz 120g for the system drive seems a bit overkill for just audio software and os. i'd have the 40g for system and 120g for audio and online samples.

you could have audio and video and 3d animation software on a 40g system drive easy. 2x 120gig for data and sound fx cds online and do your own foley too of course

other than that looks fine to me. though i'd always go for amd coz it's a slightly cheaper just like me.

With that much stuff I'd be tempted to go for a 430W Enermax power supply. Two hards disks, a few adapter cards, etc, all take their toll. Better to have slightly too much than too little in a power supply.

Also, what's the SCSI adapter card for? Are you aiming for a quiet system?

Si.

Whoops! "120g for the system drive seems a bit overkill".

The 120 drive will be the audio drive and the 40gig drive will be the system drive. Cut & paste dyslexia.

"oh and keep one box so you can run linux or bsd on it and be a geek." The wacky thing is I have been peeking into one of the linux audio sites lately.

I'll probably keep the 486 which, along with an old MOTU interface is currently acting as a MIDI patchbay for my MIDI FX and I don't see letting a decent MIDI interface go to waste just because its ISA (anyone know of a EISA tp PCI bridge and drivers and I'll look forward to loading it into the main box).

Maybe I can find a softsynth that will run on a P1 and turn the box into another synth or FX using its TB2000 card and a joystck MIDI adapter. THAT would make me happy! Fight obsolescence and consumerism!!!

I went with the Enermax 350 based upon RME's test PC but more power is never a bad thing. The SCSi Card is for my current SCSI gear: E5000, K2000, CDRom, CDRw, Orb drive.

mick, i just stuck linux on a dual boot with winxp.

not good really. linux seemed very slow, like 15 seconds to load mozilla (web browser) and even a minute at least to dir my windows network drives. seems slow as constipation really.

& most of the software i was interested in was available (free) for windows anyway.

maybe it's ok for running a server or something but ...

anyone else got any thoughts? & should i have been running linux as a text thing instead of graphic? i was running redhat 9 btw.

i used to use redhat dual-booting with win98 a while back (can't remember the version) but it was blindingly fast, especially considering the PC it was running on was decidedly average.

i installed redhat 9 on a dual boot with windows xp last week.

slow as . took ages to boot up. took 20 seconds to just start mozilla. took minutes to read a directory over a network after taking minutes to ask me for a password that doesn't exist. i was using a graphical front end, dunno if it makes a difference.

i un-installed redhat 9 this week.

(and , was that a pain in the arse)
