I have been trying to make sure that DMA is activated on my drives but just cannot find it anywhere, i know where its suposed to be in the device manager but the option just isnt there (win XP pro.)

I have two new maxtor 7200rpm drives 40+80gb very slim, could it be that the recent drives just dont even give the option and is activated by default?

I would really love to know, any ideas?, thanks!

should be under device manager, then open up your IDE ATA/ATAPI controller, look under the properties for your primary and secondary channels. Under "Advanced Settings" you set it to activate DMA if available. If that option is selected, and it's still running under PIO mode, then you probably need to download a utility from your motherboard manufacturer.

There is no 'Advanced Settings' tab or button

Check your bios settings and make sure that UDMA is enabled for both channels. Short of that, I would check MSI's website for an IDE driver.

Thanks psylichon i will check out those two things.

I was kinda hoping the new drives just configured themselves without the need (or option) to activate dma.

Usually they do just configure themselves. You're running XP? I'd almost guarantee they're in DMA mode already.

Are you noticing problems or just trying to check?
