Spaniard.mp3

heh here we go again , i'm a sucker for these threads. But it's rather intresting (especially for the one who starts it ;).

d/l the sample,
ok there's loads of delay innit but you can still hear that stuttering effect only on the choir!
I can get a "similar" effect in Logic's Tremolo - but it's just a straight LFO, not that dope RHYTHMIC stuff you can hear in this sample. (anyone slide the faders that fast on a mixer ;)

Is it just very fast and precise automation on the volume?
Any clue how they did it?

Sorrow.mp3

forgot to mention, the first track is "Spaniard" by Infected Mushroom (2001). (& Posford does it all the time)

And the new file just above is (what i suppose) Infecteds sample, from Hans Zimmer.

"Posford does it all the time"

end sentence:

Posford does it all the time and we were wondering about how he does it a dozen times now and always ended up with nothing... bastard probably uses the kyma like BT does  (didnt listen to the sample btw, just guessing at what you're after)

I can give you several ways to do this.

1) a gate that has a sidechain input. You run an audio signal, like a simple saw wave, into the sidechain of the gate with the same rhythm as you want. Voila, gated sound.

2) draw envelopes into your sequencer. Not fun, but it can be done.

3) Use a synth that processes external audio. Technically, you're using the synth as a gate.

4) For symple, periodically recurring rhythms you might try analogX's Audio Arpeggiator.

I'd bet they're using #1.

mm nope... not #1... its way too fast i think

just had an idea tho: AM modulated by a square lfo modulated by a random lfo... might work

Actually, I'd bet that a real analog gate probably would have the fastest possible attack of any method, save perhaps drawing envelopes into the sequencer.

Personally, I use the Virus for this kind of thing. You can even feed the output of one part into the input of another, so you can take your pad on channel 1 and feed it into channel 2's amp and filter. Perfect for gating effects.

Your idea of a square LFO modulated by a random LFO (if they were temp sync'd) might work, but it wouldn't be reproducable and probably wouldn't fit the rhtyhm of your track too well. It'd be luck, basically.

well ok, mabye its not too fast... but still, try AM mod and modulate it with an lfo and mess with speed and depth parameters. i got something vaguely simmilar like that...

edit.:

oh, we posted at the same time again

yeah well, gating could work too i guss :P

but if u wanna get more nasty than that try AM mod!!! :P

honestly, i know posford has been known to use C-sound.... and I doubt any of us want to get that geeky. Don't know if that's the kit he uses for this effect, though.

but i agree that analog gates probably would be required for hallucinogenic speed.

the stuttering in the I.M. clip @ 32nd notes could be done with something like the MIDIgate vst.... don't know if that's still available or not.

the really fast gating on the arp at the end sounds more like AM tied in with some fast filter cutoff mods, with immaculately programmed speed changes. But basically done with one synth likely.

My aim was to create that rhythmical effect that a LFO can't do - and this forum is ace! Thanks everyone.
I tried out the Gate/Sidechain thing Craig mentioned first, and it works just awesome for stuttering in whatever rhythm i want.
Earlier this day i was on my way to draw some friggin volume envelopes, so this method saved a lot of work.

But certainly IM have some more secrets, like the ones Psy is aiming at. Mine didn't sound as nice as IM's, but at least i'm progressing.

simple - the opening fast staccato synth-line is trigger-gating the choir pad - Listen - the choir staccato follows the rhythmic pattern of the synth part.

use MIDIGATE unless you use Logic (or is the new MIDIGATE working in Logic now?.. it used to only work in Cubase I think

or use another s/w or h/w gate

3rd or 4th or whatever vote for a gate, but the super fast stutter might just be an audio edit

theres also chopper in cubase and destroyfx "skidder"

ok this may seem like a no-brainer, but try it anyway. Route mod-wheel to attack and release times on the sampled loop of the choir. It's just a tiny little snipet of sound, essentially with formants that make it up. So, as you increase mod, attack and release fall simmultaneously, then just play the notes staccato in the passage, like the sequence. Try it at half speed. The notes will play out, and then just increase mod and they'll tighten up. There is some band-pass filtered high-end mixed in in part of the sound too, some of it being noise. The rest is just delay tricks. Should take you all of twenty minutes if you want to get it just right. That can be quite a while in composition time for some, but not impossible, if that's the thing you were after.
