Hi folks,
I'm looking to go dual monitors and I'm wondering a few things. First - is agp or pci better? I have both available. Problem now is when I change from track view to console view, the audio stutters and sometimes drops out. I currently use a pci vid card. I am going to be working with 2 17" monitors - both fairly old. I don't need super graphics as all I will be doing is music stuff. I have an MSI board, Athlon system. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I would get an AGP card with dual head output. Using AGP/PCI together, the PCI card is the "master" so everything will run a bit slower (AGP is a faster interface). Also, fewer IRQs and addresses to deal with.

If yer not needing speed-freak graphics, dual head cards are very reasonably priced, I think.

and your graphics/audio glitch probably stems from your sound and video both being on the PCI bus and sharing some sort of resource. Another reason to go AGP.

Had good luck with the ATI cards. You could've scored a dual head Radeon 128mb DDR card for like $60.

you know what?

go check that price before you get all mad...cuz that might not be right

probably is...

you dont "need" that 128 tho...so if its $10 diff...dont worry about it. graphics performance has nothing to do with audio apps

...well that's not strictly true, but then I'm being pedantic here!

More onboard memory, faster DAC etc. equates to higher supported resolutions, colour depths and refresh rate but yeah, 128MB is overkill for music..

A mate of mine tryed getting dual monitor setup using two separate video cards, he didn't recommend it, said it worth paying a bit more for a new Video card with dual-out. Drivers, Mobo etc... everything worked better with a new Video card.

i picked up 2 X trinitron 17" CRT's and an ATI 9200 128mb (can do duals) for 200 squids, all-in package... got it for the boys studio for his x-mas present... very good deal!

Any recommendations on a dual capable card with dvi outputs ?
Only have 1 tft (that also has vga input which I'm using now) but planning on getting a 2nd one in the future. I allready use dual at work and it absolutely rocks!
Ah yeah... and it's very important that there's no extra cooling fan on it. I'd rather have a slower card or pay more and not have yet another fan making noise.

My older Radeon VE fits the bill.. 32MB card, one DIV out and one 15-pin out. You can probably find one on Ebay for almost nothing.

I would definitely stand behind the transparent compatability of Matrox. It's the kind of card that you drop in and then forget you even own it. I think that's good.
For the dual DVI the Matrox Pahrelia is pretty insane. It's overkill for an audio setup for sure (lowest card is 128mb ram, I forget the other specs but they're pretty high performance), but it still shines in the compatability area and it's actually a 3 head card! Their focus is still on high performance 2d and 3d for the CAD and graphics industry rather than gaming, jut like the older cards.

So now you can fulfill your dream of having a 2 monitor setup! lol

Gladly/sadly working a lot. It's a two edged sword cuz I enjoy my IT work and I enjoy eating. But I enjoy making music too. Often times more!

I'm gonna try to participate more again and YES, I'm a brand new Sonar 3 Producer user too!
