whats that? never boost, only cut?

depends on how the original material is recorded! prolly said that to stop people having a toppy home mix - i.e less damage with cutting as opposed to boosting but if thats what they are saying as an absolute rule, well thats a shite rule lol!

they did have an article a few years back with bt saying something along those lines on the Protools digi rack shelfing plugs- always cutting to fit, and despite being a twat he knows his stuff so theres prolly a bit of principle in there somewhere but, no, defo dont stick to that mate.

true dat - many newbies ONLY think to BOOST an eq frequency to bring OUT a sound, when perhaps CUTTING the same freq' on OTHER sound smight make a space for the frequency to cut thru better without being boosted

CUTTING frequencies is a very valid thing, not to be overlooked, but ONLy to do that?... no way!!

The reason people say "boost don't cut" is because there is much less phase shift involved with an EQ cut than there is with a boost. This is not something that most people can really hear that big a difference immediately, but it does result in less clarity and presence if you have a mix with lots of heavy EQ boosts.

Just use your ears. Cutting is ideal, but not always the right solution to the job. But, if you can draw the EQ cuts to the inverse of the boost you actually want, and then just raise the channel fader, you will accomplish the same, sonically, with improved phase relations. Make sense?
