Is it worth buying ns10's monitors or should I just go out an buy a decent HIFI system.

For NS10s:
You get the TRUE sound which you do need for mixing which is VERY inportant. With a Hifi they have all that base boosters and other crap which ruin the sound.

For HIFI
You dont need to splash out on a seperate amp and you can record straight onto tape. you can play your CDs in it and basically it works out cheaper.

P.S. Are there better monitors than the NS10's......for the money?

well, it is not true to say that ns10's give a true sound..........they give an ns10 sound.......which personally, I hate.......to me it sounds like everything is being played thru' a shoebox....a sort of hollow sound.....the original NS-10's, in fact were so vicious with the top end, that engineers used to stick a RIZLA cigarrette rolling paper over the tweeter to lower the top end output........anyhow, it's basically like this.......cheaper cool looking speakers such as Jamo or some japanese system hi-fi speakers can emphasise the sound, but.......

If you are putting your speakers on a shelf in front of you, with the wall behind them, then you need to get "BOOKSHELF" speakers....... these are designed to utilise the fact that they are up against a wall to get the bass end balanced with the tops........ real "NEAR-FIELD" monitors are designed to sit on the top of a console in the center of a room, with NO wall behind them,..... If you stick them up against a wall, then this gives the wrong sound.......

personally, I use a standard hi-fi amp..... amps I have used are Technics SU-V5.... NAD, Teac etc.... all straight hi-fi amps......

Simply chooses a 30 or 50 watts per channel hi-fi amp, and a decent 3 head (if possible) cassette deck...... go and check out the "Monitors" & "Mixing" section for tips.......

Now in the last 3 years, the major companies such as Soundcraft, Mackie etc have started to market speakers......they buy parts in massive bulk, and have them made in cheap locations, you get a decent speaker for your dosh..... just check out if it's ok for each model to have them up against a wall, or not according to your room layout.....

but.....they will cost you about 180 upward per pair.... I use a pair of maudaunt short little bookshelf jobbies, they cost me 60 quid from a secodhand hi-fi specialist..with brackets !!.....
they are fine, as long as you dont push them too far........however, a LOWER monitoring level, is infinately preferable to a loud level, with stuff bouncing round the room like fuck.......

just follow the tips in the sections, especially about getting the cassette deck set-up for a tape brand and model, and good speaker cable wired in phase.......and NEVER EVER EVER..use the loudness switch, or turn up the bass or treble on the amp....keep it flat...and think subtractive when mixing......not just additive.....you should be able to get all the hi-fi kit pretty cheap.......Richer Sounds are cheapest for new kit in the UK, they do rediculous deals on stuff, .....also, they are very cheap for cassette tape......cheaper in fact than bulk "blank-shell" suppliers, unless you're ordering 500 quantity or something.... I use THATS chrome cassettes....very good indeed.....

I use NS-10M's and they don't need toilet paper on the
tweets like the earlier versions. I've mixed through alot
of different speakers and I must admit that my mixes
translate better (I hear what I intended on every
conceiveable system from boom box to friends hi-fi) with
the Yamaha's than anything else I've used. Thing is,
they don't sound especially pleasing, but for some
reason they do work as far as your mixes translating. Also, at least here in USA, over half of the studios I've
seen have NS-10's so they are a standard of sorts.

The most important thing I think is to have several
speaker systems side by side and see how the mix is doing
on the big one's with loads of bass as well as the small
full range jobbies.

I've had NS10m's for years. They were industry standard when I got them about 7 years ago. I've heard the Alesis ones and I think they sound terrible as do a couple of my friends who also use NS10s. But in reality it's not about what speakers you use, it's all about how well you know the speakers you use.

Agreed Avenue, (sorry I left my name off the post above yours) the NS-10's have a hump at around 200 Hz which kinda sorta simulates the deep bass they are lacking in. I've just recently hooked up a crossover and send the stereo highs through my NAD 3020 to the Yamaha's and the lows to my Gallian Krueger bass head and into an Ampeg cab for that sub woof affect and now I like the Yamaha's way better! Got some thumpin' goin' on.

To be honest, I actually do the majority of my mixes using 10 year old Sennheiser HD40 headphones, you know, the old flimsy type. I'll run a really nice professional sounding cd while I'm mixing and switch between that and my mix in headphones in order to get a similar sound, and it works.

Strange how Richer sounds are cheap when it comes
to hi-fi gear but their music division x-music are fairly
expensive...............
