204 - guitars & electronics

If you're trying to incorporate home-recorded guitars into your electronic music (like I am) listen up: it's obviously really hard to get that studio-perfect guitar sound when home recording, so rather than driving yourself nuts trying to get perfect sounding guitars to go with your perfect sounding synths/drum machines, try using the grittier (shittier) sounding guitars in contrast to the precision of the electronic parts. If done correctly, it sounds pretty cool to have a cruddy sounding guitar part layered against very polished sounding synths. Or just distort the synth and drum parts more to match the lo-fi guitars. Listen to Atari Teenage Riot if you have any doubts! Also, if you insist on a more polished guitar sound, keep the sound thinner than normal. The electronic parts usually cover quite a few frequencies by themselves, so a big, crushing guitar sound will usually sound out of place in the mix, and bury some of the electronic stuff. Listen to "Voodoo People" by the Prodigy for a good example of thin, yet effective distorted guitar added to a techno song. The other obvious solution is to sample guitar parts from other albums - that way the good guitar sound is already taken care of! Good luck!
