86 - How to remix in digital

HOW TO REMIX IN DIGITAL WITHOUT LOSING TIME We all know that when we mix a tune or two and listen to it or them for a couple of weeks, we always find something wrong. For example, you realize that the bass is missing. Could be because your monitors are to bassy or near a wall, etc... Then you tell yourself that doing the mix, again, is to much *&?%$/" work (you have to eq every thing over again and it won't sound the same as before, and then you'll have to start again and it's an endless cycle, a bottomless pit and...). Well my ambitionless freinds, there IS a SOLUTION!!!(If you recorded it on a digital multitrack recorder) First thing to do is to keep two tracks of the multitrack recorder free so you can downmix on them. Then, after all of that eq'ing and other sound treatments you may applie, downmix on them. The thing is that everything you've mixed is in perfect phase with the individual tracks. So, if you think that there's not enough bass, just add it. It would help if you took notes of the original eq'ing of the bass (and the other instruments). So, what if the guitar is too loud (as it is, usually)? Um...what to do, what to do? It's so simple, you probably know the answer. Just invert the phase of the signal. On the console I've been working on, you cannot invert the phase on a tape return, so I need to patch the tape return into a mic input, pading it, adjust the gain a bit, and invert the phase. Magically (or electronically), when I rise the fader towards the higher end of the strip, with the gods all shouting "EUREKA", bass slowly dissapears. All you have to do is the dosage(recommended,of course). If the tip doesn't work, don't worry the gods will punish me. Have fun.
