93 - CLICK CORRECTION (ABUSED!)

Abusing sound programs intended to correct sound can lead to some bizarre and engaging accidents. Take, for instance, this mild mannered Cakewalk/Soundforge session. In cakewalk, I wrote out this simplistic bassline, and I had the midi data sent through a Prophecy moogy type bass. I assigned the prophecy knobs to resonance, freq.cutoff, envelope, ... the usual 303 controls. Then I proceeded to record this repeating bass pattern back into cakewalk while I furiously turned knobs. The result at this point was terrible...as can be imagined, but I started chopping up this wave file into 16th beat snippets using Cakewalk's straightforward audio editor and then rearranged these snippets into a bassline playing the same tune, buts notes from later repetitions were exchanged for those in earlier repetitions, etc. The result at this point was really terrible; i mean there were these grating clicks at every 16th beat. So I joined this mess together and dragged it into soundforge, where I intended to run a click removal procedure...but out of curiosity I opted for click add. Click add? I thought. My only question was "Why?" And yet, to my surprise, something strange was produced: somehow, in adding "clicks," certain notes of the bassline were thrown out of pitch, others seemed to attack a bit too early or a bit too late, this nasty grinding happened with certain bits, and other notes became outright distorted. Obviously, since I was absurdly adding more of those irritating clicks, there was all of this high end to contend with, but, after a bit of filtering, I had this bizarre organic bass freakout...no longer did it sound like childish straight sixteenths, since a number of the tones blended awkwardly and others fell out of rhythm...in essence it sounded like the analogue monstrosity that I was hoping to emulate in the first place...only entirely broken...almost to grumpy to do the right thing. I was greatly pleased to say the least. Why do I describe this accident? Because the sound is truly strange: i know i want to go there again, but ultimately it was the result of a plunge into the absurd... Similar to my experiences with Noise Reduction...but that kind of experimentation is obvious.
