Can any one here actually say their mixes are
as big, fat and wide and also clear and so well
done that they hoenstley sound as good as
commercial albums, iam mean all this gear
we buy, should sound good iam getting good
mixes and production , still not to the
sparkeling magnificiants of the pros.
are we bashing our heads against sound
proof walls or what.
Iam ok you just sometimes think f..k me what
am i doing, ............then arr a new synth same
saw/square waveforms same damn filters ,
differentr colour, but fuck me slightly different
sound to all the other basterd synths we own
and guess what we wants it.
Phew thats better.
Peace.

i quite like doing 'punk' jams loads of me old faves were just recorded and layered from stereo pair onto tape so like sometimes to play with minimal real-time jams....although you need to spend time getting a right balance you dont have to worry about too much else....in fact some of my best moments have come from punk jams...and i sometimes hear v old stuff of mine and think 'how did i get that sound?'....

it realy helps to import a WAV file of a track that sounds good in a club into your sequencer. A/Bing is a must for me.

Get good monitors and use your ears. My mixes are solid and sound good on different systems, and jut as loud... which is a bit important... if your tracks are quieter than other tracks they won't get play.

It's not the gear though... new gear won't suddenly make it better! There's no magic in there, just knowing what works and keeping your ears fresh and OPEN!!!

Dont get me wrong iam getting good mixes
that sound good on a variety of systems, and
people like it , most people cant tell
differences between home stuff and
commercial but there is a difference, ok some
release stuff is poor but not by much , so
check out react 18 or similar and play
starbuster by friskoboy if you have decent
monitors it sounds ace. Iknow its the music
that counts not the gear and each bit if kit you
add makes it better, so having 30 grands
worth of stuff is better than 10 grands worth
stuff and a lot of realease stuff must get done
in a bigger studio....what do you think?

I think it's really not that the MORE gear you have the better... it's WHAT gear you have! Everyone always talks about how Shadow did his entire first album on MPC and headphones... fine... but it couldn't have been done as well on a SP-808! Because the MPC has what he needed to get the job done. But little known fact, once it was composed and picked up by the lable it was mixed and MASTERED on Avalon Compressors and preamps by a professional engineer!!!

So (like I say) it's not that the more gear the better, it's what gear.

Pro studio mastering will sparkle and pump better than home studio mastering, because those clean, pure, and solid analog mastering parts make a difference.

Don't worry about it until you have a reason to. If you can mix and master and do your thing that's all you need to do until you're selling your trax and reaching a wider audience... Unless you can afford $3000 for a compressor, in which case, knock yourelf out! hehehe
