I brand new to digital audio and I'm using
Cubase VST 3.7. I have a few basic
questions. If you're up for helping me out, let
me know. Thanks.

My address is jamescloud16@aol.com

post the questions here one at a time here along with some info about your system. these kind gentleman will surely assist you. the chances of receiving an email seem slim at best. but many are those who have posted and prospered.

Thanks. I'm using a Roland XP10 strictly for
Midi through an inexpensive interface into a
new HP PC. I'm encountering two main
stumbling blocks.
1.) When I record a a track, then create a new
track and switch the sound on the keyboard for
another part of the piece, the first track plays
back using the same sound I'm currently on -
not the one I recorded it with.
2.) When I mix the tracks, I'm not able to hear
the sounds as they sounded when I recorded
them.

Quickie reply(!).. when you talk about "Digital Audio" are you talking about trying to record the actual sound of your XP10 as a digital audio file (sample) into your PC?? Or are you talking about recording MIDI data, which your sequencer (Cubase ) will then use to play back sounds within your XP10 keyboard?

This might seem like an obvious question but theres a fundamental difference between the two..

At this point, I'm assuming you're using the XP10 to play in (and record) MIDI data into Cubase. I don't know the XP10 but again I'm assuming that its a "MULTI TIMBRAL" Synth? e.g. So an "8 part multi timbral" instrument is capable of playing 8 different sounds/sounding instruments simultaneously (usually one on each midi channel). If so, then you need to make sure that each multi timbral part on your XP 10 is responding on a different midi channel, and that your different Cubase tracks are all set to send midi data (back to your XP10) on the same corresponding midi channels.

Finally, if this is all in order then you need to ensure that Cubase is sending "program change" information to each multitimbral part your XP10 is playing, to ensure that the sounds you want play back each time you load up cubase and play your song - the XP10 *should* remember the sound assignements when you power everything down, but by making sure "program change" information is saved on each midi part you won't have to worry.

That seems to have done the trick. Will I have
problems when mixing down and exporting
these files? Will the program changes
remain?

Will I be able to hear them played back
correctly after exporting to a .wav for example?

Thanks very much.

nothing will be a wav. file until it is recorded into audio. midi is midi until it shoots signal at your synth and out comes the audio sound. audio is either wav. or aiff or some other format....but since we're talking pc...we'll go wav.>

start reading your manual and the online tutorials a little closer and ask away when you need more help.
