45 - Horn players...Standing still during solo's ?.....read on

Now TANDY or as their known in the states RADIO SHACK, make a clone PZM mic, ( pressure zone mic ). Guess what..? PZM's have a flat frequency response, from 20 to 20K. Also they can handle high SPL's....! So they can handle the volume you get in the mouth of a horn......AND......( you guessed it ) they're piss-cheap.!

Trouble is, people say TANDY PZM's are crap, and they're wrong, and I'll tell you why....
TANDY PZM's have a little battery compartment in the cable, it LOOKS like it takes a 1.5V AA battery, BUT IT DON'T !!....It's supposed to take a special, really expensive 9V AA SIZED battery. So people ram in a 1.5 V one and then wonder why it sounds like shit..OK.?...OK.

You can unscrew the backing-plate on a PZM, which leaves you with a tiny condenser capsule.....Try sticking it with BLU-TACK to the inside of the end of a sax......You can now go into meaningful expressive convulsions whilst soloing happily away

Great for live shows, ( but try something stronger than BLU-TACK, like gaffa tape ) Also good for acoustic guitars and violins etc.........

Now heres an extra tip for ya.....How NOT to have to buy the very expensive special 9V AA sized batteries.
Open the battery case on the PZM, and get a 9V PP3 connector from the shop.....( Oh, OK...you can open the case AFTER you been to the shop if you like ! ) The connectors are a few pence/cents. It's just a plastic tab with 2 clip contacts and 2 trailing wires. One +, and one - .

Solder the trailing wires to the terminals inside the PZM battery case, then make a little cut in the edge of the slide-on case cover with a hobby knife, so you can close it with the wires coming out to the clip.
Simple eh ?.......just connect up a normal CHEAP 9V PP battery, secure it to the case with a thick rubber band, and off you go.........

They're bloody good mikes for the money those PZM's. Brilliant for group backing vocals,( with the backing-plate on) cos they pick up the same volume from any direction. So your BV's don't have to go into a huddle to get a take.
