46 - LIVE DRUMS AND VINYL PRESSING TIP

From: Spyder

As you probably know, vinyl records are subject to a few limitations due to

the very "physical", analogue way that the music is stored on the surface

of the disk. Of course these new-fangled CDs don't suffer from it, but DJs

(bless 'em) still prefer vinyl. This can be a problem with live drums or

even sampled drums when they're pokey enough. The problem is that panning

say, your tom-toms, in a nice wide stereo spread can cause the phase of the

vinyl groove to be sufficiently "out" that when it is played the stylus

jumps out of the groove (for some *real* scratching!) I have seen

photomicrographs of this which have been used in court as evidence to give

recording engineers heavy fines so it's worth knowing!

If you can get away with it, do all the live drums in mono. That way the

phase discrepancy is zero between the two sides of the vinyl groove and the

stylus only moves in a vertical direction . . so no problem.

If on the other hand you've just *got* to have that stonking stereo drum

panorama, try putting the recorded drum submix through a stereo crossover.

Everything above 400Hz is kept in stereo, while everything below is mixed

to mono. This means that most of the acoustic energy of the kit only moves

the stylus in a vertical orientation, whilst all the high-frequency phase

information that the brain uses to decipher stereo signals is retained.

Aside from all this, a REAL mastering/cutting engineer will know their

onions and should take care of this for you . . . . if they don't, they

need their bumps feeling!
