Let's build some scoops!

Nice building a scoop bass bin article with images contributed by Paul C.

Let's build some scoops! - by - Paul C.

My friend Jay allowed me to lead him through building a pair of 15" scoop cabs for his livingroom, which you can see from the photos, is presently undergoing renovation. He decided to build the cabs right there before installing the carpet.

Suitable woofers are ones with high EBP (Efficiency Bandwidth Product), at least EBP = 90, and better 100 or more. Eminence publishes EBP, but you can also calculate EBP from EBP = fs/Qes. Also, for scoops you want fs (woofer resonant frequency) to be below the horn cutoff. For the 15" scoop this means you want fs below 40 hz.

Jay used the Eminence Gamma 15, but there are many others that will meet the simple criteria above.

In my opinion, only birch ply, 11 or 13 ply, is suitable for large speaker cabinets. MDF is too heavy, chips too easily, does not hold screws well. MDF is only suitable for small speakers, or large ones that will never be moved. For cabs that will be used for PA use, and will likely be moved often, birch ply is the only choice.

Jay started by cutting the major panels to size and with careful measurement, sketching placement of the internal panels on one side.

Note that instead of the very difficult to fabricate curved section in the horn mouth, with my advice, Jay substituted a flat panel at a 45 degree angle. Believe me, no one will be able to tell the difference.

Jay used carpenter's glue and a pneumatic nailer to tack it together until the glue dries.

This is OK as he will be leaving these speakers in his living room. If you will be moving them for PA use, use screws through the sides and into the internal panels.

Later Jay will veneer and oil these cabinets, but now it is time to test. For PA use let me suggest you use truck bed liner paint. This can be applied at home using a texture roller for a nice finish. You can also take your cabs to a commercial shop for an application of Rhino, Gator, or other brand name bed liner. This material is easy to repair later. Gouges can be filled with Bondo (autobody repair putty), sanded, and repainted.

Now Jay is testing with a simple crossover and Altec Lansing 511b horn with 902-8 horn driver. He later assembled a better crossover which I had sent him, which includes 2nd order (12 db/oct) with zobel components for the woofer section, and 3rd order (18 db/oct) with resistive padding and compensation to lift the high frequencies where they droop at the top. For these components he chose a 500 hz crossover point. He could also have used an Altec 811b or Eminence H290 horn with Eminence PSD2002 driver crossed at 1600 hz.

Here he has made a nice grill using cloth from Parts Express. This cloth looks like the old Fender grill cloth.

Not only is this speaker a rear loaded horn, it is also a transmission line. You may experiment with damping material, dacron poly fiberfill, as shown in this sketch. Don't pack it tightly, just lay it in. Experiment with the amount of fiberfill for best sound. Low bass frequencies will pass right through. Midbass and midrange (depending on amount of fiberfill) will be damped. Drill some holes in the bottom and back by the 45 degree panel in the mouth and spray in expanding urethane foam. Do not overdo this. Spray a little and let it expand, spray a little more. Excess will run out of the holes. This will stop that bottom panel from vibrating. You may also want to add a 1x4 vertically on the inside of the back panel to help prevent the back from vibrating.

With the Altec horn/driver combo and 500 hz crossover this speaker sounds amazingly real. And "It... it... it goes so low!"

Could double the height and stretch the lower exit to increase bass response?

This would also make it a nice height for a bass bin on stage.

I'd really like to know.

Thanks a bunch,
:) Gene

what about de measures of a 18subwoofer can you hel me?

Paul C.

11-Dec-06

Weblink: Saxrax.com

Jahaziel, I will email you plans with measurments for 12", 15" AND 18" versions. The measurements are in mm's. To convert to inches, divide mm's by 25.4 (mm/inch).

Gene, the 15" version is already 40" high, just over 1 meter. Making it twice as high would not be practical, either for moving it around, nor would it need to be increased that much to go lower. The 18" version goes down to about 30 hz. There is no need to go lower. I'll send you plans for the 18" version, and you can try that with your 15's. If that does not work satisfactorily, you can always cut the hole larger and drop in some 18's.

I got the plans and I appreciate your reply.

I'll start in a couple weeks and take pics.

Good, Gene! Let me suggest you also go to Parts Express and look at these items: 262-821 handles on the sides, 262-820 handles on the top rear, and 262-278 castors on the bottom rear to help you move these babies around.

I would also like to get the 12, 15, and 18 in plans. I have both a set of 12's and a set 15's that need homes. The size looks reasonable for the 15's. Is the 12 in version much smaller? These are for home audio use.
Thanks, in advance, for taking the time to read this and possibly send me some plans.

In my opinion the 12" is too small, making the low end cut off too high.

Austin Lobban

23-Feb-07

Love this set up. Would love a copy of the plans and/or drawings

Paul C.

25-Feb-07

To the fellow who posted on Jan 22, and did not post his name, these "scoop" rear loaded horns act as transmission lines. The added damping does not reduce the bass, but acts like a low pass filter. Its purpose is to damp higher frequencies that would compete with those radiated directly from the woofer and cause some response variations. The damping does not hurt the lows and flattens out the response.

There are a number of articles on the web and elsewhere discussing use of damping with transmission line speaker cabs. Look them up and do some reading and you'll understand what this is about. If you had put in your real address, I would have been glad to send you a pdf of one of those articles.

The website you suggested has plans for the 18" and 21" Mogale scoops, but none for 12" or 15". Those Mogale scoops are more sophistcated, very nice boxes, but are also much more difficult to build. The idea of this short article was to allow people to try the design by building this simplifed version.

(ie; Electrovoice) for a living room 3-way. Do you
know how much more, if any, spl (dBs) this will
provide over the driver's rated efficiency?

Also, could you please e-mail me the 12" and 15"

Plans sent to you guys, too. The plans include measurements for 12", 15", and 18" versions.

No, the scoop won't produce any greater SPL, but will give greater bass than some other cabinets.

Hi,

Are you able to provide me with the measurements to build this cab, also if you have the measurements for the 12" and 18" versions as well it would be much appriciated.

If this design was loaded with a high excursion sub would this make any difference to the response, or do the measurements differ depending on which sub you use ?

Many thanks in advance

23-Nov-07

hi great speakers recently saw the one my cousin built so would be over the moon if i could have measurements for the "15" and "18" THANKS

Paul C.

03-Dec-07

James asked, "If this design was loaded with a high excursion sub would this make any difference to the response, or do the measurements differ depending on which sub you use ?"

No, don't do that. High excursion subs are generally best suited to small cabinets. I gave specific qualifications for woofers suitable to this type of cabinet (or any other horn loaded cab). High EBP, resonoance below cab cutoff.

When a suitable woofer is used in a horn loaded or ported cabinet, properly loaded, there will be minimal cone excursion. In fact, if you see a 15" or 18" cone bouncing around a lot with these types of cabinets, you need to run a subsonic filter.

Many thanks in advance

12-Dec-07

i would like to know how you go about building the double 18" scoops

anon

17-Dec-07

Scoops DO increase efficiency and will have a far higher volume (1w/1m) than a simple reflex or almost any other type of cab, the downside being the frequency cancellation at roughly 60-80hz in the vital "kick" range, this is due to the direct radiating speaker and the horn (suffering from a delay of a few ms) being out of phase with each other

In the design of the 18 inch scoop the chamber that the speaker is housed in is not deep enough for the new speakers that are 8-9.5 inches deep. Also,I would like to have a copy of the manual these scoops came from and would like to know who was the designer of the 18inch and what year it was. In 1992 I was importing Fane 18XB from Fane. Their speaker handbook had no 18 or 12 inch designs. When I wanted to build some 18 in 1995 I contacted JBL, EV, Celestion and Fane none of them had 18 inch scoop. The Fane Designer Steve Hewlitt sent me a 15 inch copy from their handbook with some amendments. When I drafted it on plywood, somethings were not right. There was a guy who brought some scoops from England 30inches deep but also had some flaws. I came up with my own design and built mines in 1995 and now all DJ's in Grenada is using it. A few years ago I redesigned it and now I have 3 models of 18 inch.

Thanks for the plans. I am building a slightly modified pair now. Adapted the measurement for some 10s I
have laying around.

As for the poster above, all of the measurements are pretty much (some very slight variations) proportional
to the size of the driver for the 18s 15s and 12s. You could just adjust all of the measurements for the 12
by multiplying by 0.833. That is what I am doing, as an experiment, and an exercise in woodworking but I
am not sure what the results will be. Probably decent, but not optimal. May not give the same lowness of
bass response as the other boxes, as the horn would only be about 3 Feet long, but on the plus side, there
wont be any phasing until you get to a wavelength of 12 feet which is above 90Hz, which is where I generally
crossover anyhow. The longer the horn, the lower the phasing will occur in a scoop. I am thinking there
will be some advantages to making a smaller version, but there will also certainly be a loss in efficiency
without the 7 foot horn.

Could always just build the 12 version and put a ten in it or double up 10s on an 18 box.

Be careful with a 1 OHM speaker, unless your amp says it can handle that low of impedance. My amps would
fry for anything under 2.

Please send me the measurements for 18" scoop. I'm using B&C speakers.

Hi, I'm needing to build an enclosure for a B&C 21SW115, and after taking a good look at some of the 18" plans, I am wondering if a set of plans for a 21" might be a good project for me. The driver fs is 33Hz, and I'm hoping for extension down to around 32 if it is possible. What can anyone tell me? I am wanting to take full advantage of the drivers capabilities, and don't mind if it is the size of a small fridge; It's for home AV, and my sattelite speakers can out-perform my current JBL 2245H.
Any ideas or plans
?

Hello,
What is your opinion about using this woofer in a front loaded horn/bass reflex? I saw some modified La scalas with bass rexflex on a forum, but i am not shure if am safe with only 3mm of excursion....
Thank you very much for sharing your designs!

I am tight on money would this box setup work for car subwoofers? If i
loaded a 10 or 15 inch into this horn how would the performance stack up?

hi paul i noticed that you recomended that you could use a 15 in an 18 inch cab does this affect the
performance of the 15 being that it is in a bigger bin or does it still sound ok

hi
this look like a very realistic plan i have two Altec 515 and would like to
ask you if it would be possible to "narrow" the front panel size from ~56CM
to about 44CM? would it dramatically affect the bass response? (as we wont
touch the horn length)
If you have any comment on this kindly let me know
thanks much
Harel

Hello,

I have two pairs of 15-inch speaker Monacor SP-380PA, JBL 130D, two trumpets altec 511B engines with Electro Voice and two crossover Beyma FD212. I would put everything in a box without bass reflex, I think the model Altec Barcelona whose volume corresponds to the needs of Woofer and room for the trumpet. I need a schematics for building these beautiful boxes and instructions for wood used and the different materials that make up the inside of the box; rock wool and black block, plastic grids?

Passionately,

thank you

Je cherche un shmas de construction pour ces boites magnifique et une notice pour le bois utilis et les diffrent matriaux qui compose l'intrieur de la boite; la laine de roche et les bloc noire, les grilles en plastic?

put a key for the dimension tables -ie are the figures in cm mm in ft.
More detail measurement may be needed for the first timers.

Hi, I love the idea of the 12 & 15 scoops, could you please mail me the plans?
Have some spare car subs lying around and would love to test them with it.
Do you perhaps have any specs of drivers used for these cabinets?
