Roland Juno-106

The Juno-106 was released by Roland in the same year as the TR-909 drum machine (1984) and as with the TR-909 it was the key year in which they released analog/digital hybrid equiptment with MIDI control. This makes the Juno-106, one of the few genuine older analog bits of kit (although it's got DCO's) with MIDI control. The 106 was a massively popular synth for dance music of all styles back in the day due to this fact.

Basically the Juno-106 is a 6 voice poly DCO analog synth with an all analog synthesis section. You get 1 Oscillator per voice, with sub-osc'.... These can be stacked in 'Unison' Mode which then puts the unit into monophonic mode and gives big fat bass and lead lines. The final secton of the 106 sees the signal pass through a Chorus section that gives it the big 106 wide chorus sound.

Like the Alpha Juno synths that followed, the Juno-106 has a High-Pass filter in the signal chain between the DCO's output & the main VCF Low-Pass filter. The Hi-pass is not voltage controlled & manually adjustable only & in effect it acts as an EQ before the oscillator signals reach the main filter section.

Outside of that, it does all the usual stuff for this type of synth, but sounding thinner than a real VCO synth. It's this stacked mono-mode that gets the much sought after fat lead and bass sound. As used by artists such as Vangelis, William Orbit, Biosphere, 808 State, Moby, Todd Terry and many more.

The rare Juno-106S

The 1985 Juno-106S is quite rare to find & is 100% identical to the standard Juno-106 but it has stereo speakers built in to the front panel... A somewhat strange product release decision from Roland.

The Juno-106 a well built unit & last of the Roland Juno line to feature colourful front panel layout and control sliders for all the synth engine main parameters as opposed to membrane switches which followed on all the remaining Roland analogs. It has a 61 note keyboard and plenty of hardware controller source options.

As you can see, there's lots of control & editing sources, the results of which can be saved to 128 different patch positions, and of course twiddled live or to recording or saved to disk, cos ALL the sliders and knobs output sysex.

DCO:

LFO Modulation, Pulse Width Modulation, PWM Mode Switch (LFO/Manual), Pulse Wave (On/Off) & Indicator Waveforms, Sawtooth (On/Off) & Indicator Waveforms, Range Selector Buttons (16', 8', 4'), Sub Oscillator Level, Noise Level.

The DCO section has a Pulse/Square & Sawtooth waveform switch. Both can be active together or either can be on or both can be off & you can use the Sub-oscillator and/or Noise Oscillator only. If both DCO waveforms are active there is no way to balance them with a level control as this is a one Oscillator per voice synth.

There is a Pulse wave Sub-Oscillator & White Noise section next to the DCO section & varying amounts of Sub Pulse wave and/or Noise can be blended in with the main DCO sound. The Sub-Oscillator is always 1 octave lower than the selected DCO frequency range which is switchable across 3 octaves.

The DCO Pulse/Square/Sawtooth output can be have Pulse-Width applied either manually or via the LFO by using the MAN / LFO select switch. The LFO slider to the left of the PWM slider controls the LFO to pitch amount to give Vibrato affect. The LFO itself has its own section on the far left with controls for Rate with accompanying flashing LED rate lamp & a slider for the Delay time.

LFO:

Rate and delay

VCF:

Cutoff Frequency, Resonance (0- Self Oscillation), ENV Modulation, Polarity Switch (inverter), LFO Modulation, Key Follow(0-100%)

ENV:

Gate and a/d/s/r

VCA

level and gate/env

CHORUS:

stereo off/1/2

On top of that lot, you've also got plenty of controllers

  • Volume
  • Portamento Time
  • Portamento Switch (ON/OFF)
  • LFO Trigger Sens
  • Bend Sens (DCO)
  • Bend Sens (VCF)
  • Bender Lever

Once the sounds are edited using these controls, you can select from A or B banks; then save in 8 banks of 8 patches.; 128 total

So all in all you can see why this synth became so popular, with a resulting hike in price on the market. You used to get these for about 250 quid 15 years ago, but prices have now risen to anywhere from £1000 to £1700 or maybe even a bit more more for a mint condition & fully serviced unit.

The SynthPlus 60 or H-60

Incidently; Roland made some Home-Keyboard versions of some of their Juno synths, including the H-10 which was based on the Alpha Juno 1 & the H-80 based on ther Alpha Juno 2... Roland also made one for the Juno-106 - The Roland H60 or Synth Plus 60 .... if you can find one, it's the same internal board and parts as the Juno-106... basically it's a 106 in a different box for home keyboard players type unit

got that HS-60. found it real cheap in a pawn shop here in the states. have to replace the LFO slider. $7 part. many complain about missing slider knobs. i pull all of mine off so my fingers don't bump adjacent parameters. it's much better this way. try it!

Wayne, are u sure that Autechre uses/used the 106? I used to have one and regret that I sold it. I have a juno2 now, and they way different. But it's not worth £400. No way.

It was my first keyboard and I sold it about 6 months before techno took off. I still cringe when I think about it. I'd love to have another one, but it'd have to be a 9, at least. The one I sold was a 10. I think the Juno of today might be the Waldorf, so you might want to reconsider if you're about to sell one...

"...I need a 9 or 10..." ,

What does this mean? I'm looking at getting a Juno-106 and I keep on hearing numbers such as 2, 9, 10, etc. What do they mean? Thanx.

MKS-7: 3 Juno 106's and a 707, but you can only program one parameter at a time on the front panel and no saves. Anyone know how to get around that, or a good s/w editor?

Found a Juno-106 today for $280 and I'm in heaven. A 9 or 10 refers to the rating of the keyboard's condition. Take care...

When referring to the condition, does that simply mean external (scratches & dings) or does it have to do with the innards/how it sounds/etc..?

thanks

It's probably harder to find Junos in Europe than the

states, they're all over here. Although condition varies

from excellent to awful.

I'm crazy, I have two (one HS-60, one Juno 106). (:

I just ran across a Juno-1 in a pawn shop the other day

and was wondering if it was worth the buy. At the

moment it would just be a toy, but who knows what the

future holds. It looks like it's in pristine condition.

What should I be willing to pay for this piece?

This Synth is awesome, and it would be the 2x price

(second hand) if it had not been produced so many

(4000 units)

This is a synth to purchase, i give it 10/10

You want to hear a steal? My friend got a 9 or 10 106 for $50 US dollars. It was disgusting and it's like picking up a TB303 for $150. Fortunately, he's in my band so I'm able to use it. These deals are out there -- just look in the right places.

I picked up a Roland HS 60 for around $250 American to learn about analog synthesis and as my first serious keyboard. The unit has the same exact board and voice packs as a Juno-106, and includes built-in stereo speakers. Color is a subdued brown. By buying the less well known model, you can save yourself a pretty penny.

I recommend it as a good keyboard for beginners,
although it does not work well as a controller
(no velocity or aftertouch). I learned a lot about
subtractive synthesis from this beast and love
the sounds that you can create with it. This is a beginner's synth that will always have a place in your kit.

Well, I have a 106 but I suspect all us know it enought. It's a very simple synth anyway:

1 DCO -With saw and square waves, both can be generated simultaneously (the square wave have PWM from the unique LFO). -3 octave range buttons. -Pitch modulation from the LFO.

1 Sub Oscillator -Square wave output. -Fixed range at 1 octave below the main oscillator. -Volume slider.

Noise generator -White noise with volume slider.

You can switch off the DCO output by pressing the waveform select buttons until the activity led turn off, and then you can hear only the other sources at the each volume slider setting. If the volumen slider of the sub and noise are setted to "0", then you can output a sine wave by setting the filter to self-oscillation.

HPF -Non variant/non resonant hipass filter that can assume 4 differents values. -In the lowest value the manual saids it boost the bass, so keep it in this position.

VCF -The classic Roland resonant lowpass filter (24db/oct I think). -It can self-oscillate at max resonance values. -3 control sliders: EG control amount (with inverse EG switch) LFO control ammount Keyboard tracking

I found this last slider VERY important for the final sound, unlike the ones on my other analog synths (Polysix, CS20M, Teiscos). Until I was start to move it I think that the 106 has a very narrow sound palette, try change its values and hear what happens.

VCA -With EG/GATE switch and amount slider.

EG -the classic ADSR.

LFO -Only sine (or triangle, I don't know) wave output.

Chorus -Stereo (and noisy) BossPedal-type chorus with 2 modes ("chorus" and "more chorus")

All the parameters are programmables in a single patch. There are 128 patch locations. When you call a stored patch and make some slider movement, the parameter jump and match the slider actual position and a red led dot appears in the display (a segment leds with 2 digits display).

All your slider movements and button pushings are sents out via MIDI as SysEx messages, so you can attach a MIDI sequencer thats record real-time SysEx and then playback they to the 106. Also when you call a saved patch, the SysEx data of this patch is sent out, but not a program change message (altough the 106 can response to incomming program change messages) This feature allows you to dump (1 per 1) your patches via MIDI to a external storage media (computer, etc.).

You have to poly modes but altought I can hear the difference I can't say exactly what each one do. When you press both poly modes at the same time you stacks the whole 6 voices of the 106 in a monophonic voice. This sounds great in theory, but the extremely pressicion and stability of the DCOs make it useless for phattering the sound in the way a machine with fluctuants VCO will do (like the Polysix).

You can store the patch data to cassette, but its a very tedious task.

Left Hand Controls -The classic Roland pitch/modulation lever thats can control both pitch and filter cutoff in left/right movements, and turns on the modulation when you move it forward. -3 sliders thats controls the quantity of the lever effect over pitch, cutoff and LFO. -A portamento ON/OFF switch and time knob. -The general volume knob.

Because the synth sends the slider movements as SysEx messages, you got a hard time if you want to edit the data in your computer, but if you don't uses too much pitch bends (as me) you can turn the lever's pitch amount slider to "0", the cutoff slider to max and then use it to send pitch bend messages thats are more easy to edit grafically. Also you can create pseudo-sample&hold modulations to the filter cutoff by drawing quantized steps (1/16, etc) in the pitch bend grid of your computer and then sends they to the 106 with the note data. I use this technique programming an alleatory 1/16 pattern of pitch bends values and then cutting and pasting it as an audio loop along the track, so the azarous motif will repeat after a periodic lapse. With the only exeption of the pitch bend/mod lever, the rest of the left hand controls don't output any kind of MIDI messages, but you can control the amount of the sequencer's piych bends routed to pitch and/or cutoff by alters the sliders in real time.

It is a very reliable synth and a great sounding one. Not the thing for create complex modulated patches but a lot of acid basses and warm pads.

The only drawback: the filter have a step, quantized, "zippery" response when the resonance is at high values, but its only if the cutoff was altered manually or via MIDI Sysex messages, not when it's controlled by the EG or LFO (and I think the bender stick).

Mine was one of my girlfriend's best gifts and I really love both (Daniela and the 106).

Dan Ieh Montevideo - Uruguay

PS: as you can see my english is terrible, so excuse me and help me learn by tell me the errors. Thanks!

I love my Juno 106 almost as much as my Korg DW8000 I bought years ago. Nothing new can touch this though. I've bought alot of those boards with the fancy cartridges and disk drives. Screw all that. This rocks and I play heavy metal keyboards, so it has to rock!

The only board that I've sold/traded that I've had second thoughts about. I got mine for $300 including original manual and a carrying case. A fun synth and easy to use and with midi too! Traded mine (with a few others)in for a JP8000. Not the same, but more versatile & reliable. The store I traded it into gave me about $300 credit and is now selling it for $699! But I don't think it has sold yet.

Find it!! Buy it!! Use it!! love it!!

poly or monophonic true vintage sound,

only down side is you cant use 16 parts

like the new gear. Small sacrifice.

CURE: Buy 16 of them!!

(also very reliable, stays in tune)

Nothing is better for trance or happy harcore than the

juno 106... I just wish I could afford one. Whoever

thinks that you can get them for a good price in the US

is crazy. Unless you find someone who is willing to sell

it for a good price, get ready to pay about 450$us. I've

seen people trying to get about 600$. I guess I'll have

this little fucker rocks...my only synth thus far, but i've done a shitload of tracks with it, from abient to hardcore industrial to acid...just record loops and sequence them in MW; add drums with fruity loops, you've got an excellent setup for cheapish. and bout the mbeing expensive here in the US...well i paid $400 for mine, which is higher than I often see them, but I also got a strange model with a wooden bottom and grey coloring instead of black (no, it's not an hs60!!) plus all the DCO chips had just been replaced 2 days before I bought it...i played an akai ax60 the other day though and i think i like it more than my juno! more modulation options, bitimbral, real VCOs, grittier sound, often cheaper...one day i'm going to try to get one; anyoen looking for a 106 might want to check out the ax60.

I luv my 106, I bought it for £250 about 5 years ago.

You can get my free editor for the 106 (Windows 3.x or 95) from http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~dave.ch/midisoft.html. It doesn't do a lot that you can't do with the physical panel, except that you can send the PWM "over the edge" into complete cutoff, and save and name your patches of course.

I'm going to try and make a long story short.

1986 - bought 106 for around $900.00 U.S.

1990 - sold it in a fit of insanity for $150.00 Can.

1996 - bought Roland JW-50 first sequencer

1998 - baought Korg N364

1998 - started thinking how much I missed my old 106 this was made worse , when I listen to Orbit .

1998 - sold JW -50 for $500.00 Can ( which happens to be the price I paid for it !

This is where the story gets good !!!!!!!

1998 - was in music dtore here in Vancouver , when I overheard a women asking " I wonder if this store would take trade ins on synths ? "

So I went up to her and just asked her what she had . She said well I have a Yam DX7 ( sigh , not interested ) and I also have a Roland Jno 106 . NOW I've been checking around for them and I

ve seen them for $600.00 US . So I composed myself and asked her how much .

She replied " ummmm I don't know $200.00 .....

I took a minute , after i changed my shorts and very calmly said SOLD

Later that afternoon it was delivered to my place , with a hard case .

It's got a warm, full sound and it's fun to program, but I get tired of it's sameness in tonal quality. All in all, not really worth the trouble, as alot of people end up selling them because they keep blowing bad Vcf/Vca chips. Keep this in mind, YOU MAY BE PURCHASING A LEMON! Lemonade is good, but sometimes you want different flavours. Gor for a Matrix1000 w/programming software or something for cheap, reliable analog sounds. I'd avoid these...

I picked up mine from a pawn shop for US $200. It is actually a HS 60 (the grey one). It is tight. I has amazing sounds; ground shaking bass to souning really thin. I love it & will never ever get rid of it. It is also my first true analog synth. I also have other wannabe analog synths like Yamaha DJX, Roland MC303 & a shit load of software synths; & all I got to say the Juno 106 blows all of them off.

I bought one of these NEW back when it came out. I was lookin' for a keyboard to play out, and this was what I came across. I agree - this thing still rocks!

I have to admit - I haven't even replaced the battery yet! I don't have any leads on where to get one, though.

I´ve had two juno 106´s and I must say
it´s one of the most hyped and
over-rated synths ever buildt.The juno 6
and juno 60 had a warm and powerful
sound but the 106 sucks.Don´t buy one
just because everyone says it´s a
"must-have"-machine.Its not!It´s an
overused piece of shit if you ask me.
Sorry......

I've got a 106. Warm sound, intuitive layout, MIDI, saves patches. Whoever says a 6 or a 60 sounds warmer is bullshitting you. That's a myth created by those who paid a shitload of $$$ to midify one. I love mine for warm fat strings and basses that go deeper and deeper without losing the power to convince those who really listen to it.

The 106 is a great synth - fuck the phatness - it's a nice silky thin sound that can be applied in any type of music, especially in (Sasha/Digweed) trance. You can't get that sound in any other synth! The Jp-8000 has a couple great Juno presets by the way.

The Juno-106 is also very versatile synth with sub-bass - you can't go wrong with it! Especially when backing up mid-toned tracked basses...

A common misconception is that putting the 106 in momo-mode give s "huge" result. Actually, what happens is the osc. phase lock together, giving it a nasaly hollow sound. Not "phat" by any means. Hardly musically usefull. But other than that, it's an AWESOME synth!!

I think they are a bit overrated really. I've got a juno 60, but I've used a 106 before, and I don't think they sound any different, you'd need to have them both in front of you to tell... I can't be arsed using it much, because it isn't midi'd up and to be honest, it only does one type of sound really well. If you want the classic squelchy Roland analogue acid techno thing, then fine, but if you want anything more interesting, you have to work hard.

Don't forget, the Juno 106 was
released back when Roland and
other manufacturers were big on
relasing the 'home version' of many
of these 'pro' machines.
Hence the Roland HS-60, which I
have.
If you find an HS-60, and think, gee,
that looks like a Juno 106 with
speakers on it, well it is, I opened it
up, and it says Juno 106 on the
motherboard.

I have pretty good results messing
with patches and transferring them
and storing them in the Mac with
MOTU's Unisyn 1.5.
A very cool synth, screw the bloated
physical modeling newbies, this is
the real deal, nice & meaty.
But the dual mono mode does suck.

Mediocre synth - good for bass and not much else. One can do a whole lot more with other same-period analogs.

To even infer that a Juno 106 is an ordinary Analog synth is an insult to any Juno 106 owners out there. The birdbrain who wrote this article is obviously not a musician and if they are they only play with one hand. I need not explain what the other hand is doing. If this is offensive to the writer, it was meant to be.

FUN FUN FUN.
EASY EASY EASY.
Sounds GREAT.

This board is a classic.Maybe cos of
the sound? Ahhhhh yesss!!!
It is great sounding and a sinch to
program. Full of beautiful warm
sounds. *#* To all the people that
say the 106's sounds are the same
doesnt know what the heck they are
doing. This board just like others
depends on the user to make it
sound goooood.If you cant make
good patches, then its you...not the
board.*#*

The cheapest I see em for sale is
$300. I got mine for $430, but this is
one of the finest examples you will
ever find. The original owner must
have only used it a few times. =)

Buy one. Its worth it.

I love mine. Not only can I drop it on the floor whenever I want, but I firmly believe that the right slider configuration can conceivably set it on fire. In fact, come to think of it, my friend Andy set some his on fire through normal use...that little bitch, I am jealous

I hate the chorus, the port is cool, the sub osc is dangerous. There is a neat little patch editor app out there for the 106 that stores patches and also randomizes them for big fun.

Zen,you can't control the parameters of the synth becuase they use sysex midi messages and not stanard controlers like the prog change and not on/off. if you have a programable contoler like the kenton, or the likes, you can program it with the proper contoler strings needed to remote control your juno , or use your juno to control other synths you will need the waveidea midi remapper which with convert the sysex to controlers.

by the way next time use the synth forum.

The pitchbend is no special sysex command. It is standard stuff. Probably you have to put the 3-way switch labelled "Function" in another position then 1. 2 goes for Prgm-change+bender and 3 are full sysex.
By the way a great sounding synth which have served me since 1984. I end up using it every song, mostly for bass. I have lot of other analogs SH-101, JP-6, P5, Mono/Poly, MS20 and this is a killer! Slow envelope? You can say a lot about the 106 but it have extremely fast envelopes, great for basses.

The 106 was my first synth way back in '85 and I still have it - it's on just about
everything I've ever done (pop/dance).

back then MIDI was still new, and Roland were streets ahead... the 106 transmits
sys ex from its front panel at all times, no setup needed - just record her output
and twiddle away - awesome for sweeps and acid bass mods.

Weak points? well, I dunno why they did away with the arpegiator from the 6/60,
and the 106 doesnt have the same build quality. Mines stood up pretty well, but a
few keys are gone and right now it needs a full overhaul - but it's 20 years old,
and been thoroughly gigged...

Sound wise its great... Just the one DCO plus sub, so its not as fat as a Jupiter,
but it does great pads leads and basses... Its a bit weaker on Brass, strings and
really huge sounds... anytime you'd stack oscillators other than straight sub
octaves, basically. The filter is nice and sharp though, and the 106 does an
awesome 303 impersonation, if you know how to set it up. Mono mode ( stacked
oscillators) never worked for me.. always sounded like the tuning was off, but its
been a great workhorse...just dont expect it to do what a 3 osc minimoog, or 2
osc JP 8 will do, and you'll get on fine...

As much as I love the 106, I have one of the lemons which has given me a fair bit of grief...I'm still looking for some sort of ET being that can fix it - permanantly!! Beware!!! If you're buying one, test it for at least 15 minutes.... this will allow it to warm up and you'll hear if one of the voices is failing. Play a quick scale, if one of the voices squeals or there is no sound at all, don't buy it!!!

Fabulous Synth - Shimmers and you can use it for almost anything: Basses, leads and pads as well as crazy
sound effects.

Reliability is an issue, I recently had a voice chip replaced and re calibrated and already things are going
wrong. minor things, like the filter randomly opening sometimes (turning it off and on again usually fixes
it!) and the octave shifter not fully working.

Enough for me to work around! I'm a drummer in a band, considering migrating to keys with this as part of
the live rig.

ANx-1 is a really nice kb, but I whould try to get a CS6-X and then try to get the ANx-1 add on, you will notice the big improvement trust me... and if you can get the DX-7 board , you will be in heaven .take my word.
