Roland JUPITER 6

The Roland Jupiter-6 (JP-6) is a 6 voice, 12 oscillator polysynth, numerically next in the Jupiter series from the Jupiter-4 although it was actually released AFTER the Jupiter-8 in 1983. The JP-6 was one of the first synths to feature MIDI which arrived in the same year, 1983.

The Jupiter-6 oscillators offer Triangle, Sawtooth & Variable Pulse width on both Osc's 1 & 2. Osc-1 has a further 4th choice of Square wave while Osc-2 offers Noise as the 4th waveform, but uniquely the Jupiter-6 could activate up to all 4 Oscillators per VCO section to create blends of the 4 waveforms & the VCO Oscillator selector was a rotary control which allowed you to sweep between wave shapes to mix a balance between any two. These features plus the addition of Oscillator sync & cross modulation all added more tonal variety to the Jupiter-6 sound arsenal.

The JP-6 also features various Split keyboard modes as well as Unison & Solo Unison, which gives all 6 voices on a single selected key. These features can be combined with the split feature giving various stacked oscillator arrangements on different total keys being pressed. The Jupiter-6 was therefore capable of traditional pads and poly synth roles but could be turned into a stacked oscillator monophonic lead machine.

Regarding the jupiter 6...A very interesting machine... strengths: the osc sync with pitch bend assigned to only one osc is unbelievably rocking and powerful and when using the pitch bend wheel it is possible to raise jimi's ghost...also the keyboard feel is quite responsive...Weaknesses: a certain sameness of sound good for buzzy rocking guitarlike sounds but nowhere near as versitile as a JP8...

Jupiter 6 is one of the coolest synths if ever used! Only thing thats missing is a lfo with retrigger but there are other ways to fix that small problem. Any way I really like the Jupiter alot and use it alot in drum and bass and in trance and hardcore!

Visit www.cenobite.demon.nl

This is a trancecore label from a friend of me.

He own's a msk 80 with programmer and I know he is crazy about this machine too!

you should check out this site and maybe check out some audio.

If I could -
I'll give it a 10 out of 5 !!!
Jupiter-6 is the wild child of the jupiter parents
the father is the Jupiter-8 and the Mother is the Super-Jupiter ( MKS-80)
The Jup-6 is in my view one of the most capable synths ever created.
its got the body of the Jup-8 and the soul of the Super-Jup.
it has it's own sound that no other synth can produce thanks to the multi-mod filter and the multi VCO's.
Mine is equipped with the "Europa" upgrade from synthcom.com
that allows it to be
what it ought to be...
among many new and modern features found on VA synths you will find also
a full Midi specs ( including Sysex )
without the "europa" upgrade it is still
an amazing synthesizers.
you can create any sound from a fat bass
to the lushest strings thru bells and sweeping acid pads.
the Jup-6 can be split to 2 sounds with
2 full indi controls such as arpigiator,
vari-unison,portamento etc.
it is a very heavy synth and built like a tank, yet it looks like nothing else with millions of LED's glowing in the dark...
I also own the Jup-8 and the old version Super-Jup with the MPG-80.

I can say honestly that it is one of my all time favorite synth.

once you understand the features
you will never give it up.

Hi Lior,
you talked about that "Europa"-Upgrade for the Jup 6. I checked the Synthcom-website but they say that they are still beta-testing. Where did you get that upgrade? And how much does it cost?
thanx, Rob

Perfect Synth,

When you put your vco1 into sync state the Jupiter is gonna say some nasty things, I don't know what he says, but he really means it! When the Europa Upgrade is availlable (15-nov-01) every slider and knob except of the bender and lfo is midi controllable. So if you can hold of one of these bad boys don't hesitate, this is the coollest analoque synth ever.

What can i say about this synthesizer..
It's underated, it's fat, it sounds fantastic.

It used to be looked at as a lightweight Jupiter 8 years ago, and how wrong can those people be..
It has better tuning stability and has a sound more suited to todays music.

Mine has been upgraded with the Europa system, which allows full transmit and receive of MIDI CC data, which brings an old analog monster right up to date.

I have made some really awesome noises, on this beast.

In addition to incredibly scary Unison sounds which throw all 12 oscillators together for techno sounds etc, i have managed to get beautifully translucent strings and ambient sounds out of it too. But it is capable of ripping speaker cones to bits too, so be careful.

I love it...
it's great, i only own two other analogs, a Prophet T8 and a Rhodes Chroma Polaris, and it's a perfect companion to the other two.

If you can find one, buy it !
Regards

Zydek

sound as good as the Jupiter-8, but
then it was not a Jupiter-8.

I had a JP-6 for a long time. Let it go when I came across a JP-8 and guess what, I bought one again and let the 8 go. Here is why...

The JP-8 is a nice and heavy synth. Liked it more then the Prophet T8 due to the simple fact, that you can use one of the programs in the pool for split and layer instead of copying it to the respective side (T8 had two memory pools, one for lower and upper). Anyway, one thing I never liked with my JP8 and that was the fact that all modulations are rather short in range. It was more like having a preset machine with some influence. The JP6 has much bettter range and you actually have to be careful when moving one of these sliders. The JP8 though, excels in pads and warmer sounding sounds be far. All the sounds have this thick and warm feeling to it. I guess it helps that you have sinus waveform in the LFO section. The JP6 is way harder and cooler sounding. Not easy to get something warm out of that synth. However, the range of sounds are much greater. Not only the modulation depth is amazing, also the features. They improved over the JP8 drastically: multimode filter, crossmod via env, pulse with manual AND modulation, etc. The only thing really missing is the dual layer and random arp feature that is added via Europa though.

I do not want to say that the JP6 is better than the JP8 in general. Like I stated before, the JP8 sounds different and if you like it, more analog. However, for my style and demands the JP6 is a way more capable instrument. Of course, 8 voices would be nice too. What I really love the JP6 for is the stab brass sounds and effects. Even I came up with a decend string pad that I use all the time. I would say that 80% of the sounds I made are using sync. A big procentage with that is using the combination of sync and cross mod. It is the same feature that makes the Korg Mono/Poly so interesting, even it lacks the X-mod envelope function.

Everything is laid out fine, with much better color scheme than the JP8 (IHMO). Also, compared to the JP8, it adds another full LFO to the picture. The only feature I would like to see (and I might modify mine in the future) is Filter FM.

To round it up, the JP6 is not fat. It can sound fat under certain conditions though, but the filter are thin sounding with higher resonance. I can understand why people misslike the JP6, because no instrument can do it all.

I've still got a Jupiter 6 though it's collecting dust in the studio at the moment.
A great synth with the emphasis on hands on editing. I managed to change the midi speck from omni on to default ch 1 so it was more usable in the studio.
There are hundreds of possibilities morphing tones and shapes between the VCOs and through the VCF and envelopes but the unison mode with the detune is great as a mono synth.
The arpeggiator is great fun too.
I must give it an airing.

This is an amazing synth. it has got 12 oscillators and you can use them in different ways; Unison (all of them stuck together) in you can define the detuning between them. Solo (just two oscillators) and more ( 4 oscillators and 8). This can be done by splitting the keys and dividing the voices between the two halfs.

The filter is pretty worthless compared to my ms20 and minimoog. But the oscillators are better sounding. So if you have a mini, just use the jupiters oscillators and the mini's filters and you're away!!

A classic

the jupiter6 is a classic synth. and while many people call it the little brother of the jupiter eight i kinda see it as its own thing. mean theres something about the way it sounds wich makes it uniques and fabulous.
if jimi hendrix was a synth player this is most likely what his synth woul sound like. intensley fuzzy and splittingly piercing at times.
allthough that being said this board can also make some of the prettiest synth and bell sounds ever heard on a analog keyboard.
the keyboard can be split as well wich is a cool thing.
some people talk about how great the juno synths are and well they are cool but they are no where near the sonic possibilites wich this board posseses. its a classic and prices are firming up right now.
get one while you still can soon these will most likely be in the two thousand dollar price range for a average example.
this synth is awesome for all styles of electronic music. period.
