Yamaha RY-30
Can be thought of more as a synth that happens to play drum sounds......it has awesome editing facilities for a drum machine with envelopes & filters etc etc......The only thing is..... You have to try to find the Dance cards that were released for a very limited period before the box was discontinued....or use some loaded waves & synthesise yer own......There were 2 "Dance Cards"......Dance & Soul....House & Rap are the titles......The cards were put together by Gota...(Bomb the Bass, Massive Attack, Soul II Soul programmer).....dunno if they actually were ever released tho......
The editing on the RY30 is well above most units.....especially cheap as it's a secondhand item now really........The RY 30 utilises a pitch type wheel, that can be assigned to things like Filter, Panning, Pitch, Decay etc....The wheel can also control the Volume & timing (within a pattern) of the kit sounds....The RY 30 also reads SY/TG 77 & SY/TG 55 cards...so you can input all sorts of raw waves & synthesise them....The Synthesis section includes:.....Up to 2 waves per voice, each with seperate Level, Pitch (+/- 6 octaves !!), Filter, with rate & level, basic envelopes etc....The filters have Resonance & cut-off...and is switchable from 12 to 24 db....Velocity is assignable to Filter, Pitch, Envelope etc......All in all a very very versatile machine...with 20 bit outputs and 48k 16 bit samples.....I'm not sure if any dance kit sounds are on the SY or TG cards or how well you could try to synthesise your own,......but If you can find the cards with the dance stuff on..... these machines KIK ASS !!!.........10/10

We used one of these for years, the synth sounds are pretty limited as you only get saw, pulse and tri waves. The filter cannot be altered between notes, you have to retrigger the sound to alter any of the synth parameters. The drums are a bit on the weak side, bass drums are limp to say the least. You can use sound cards from the TG77 in the RY30, but I never found any for sale near me.
btw I did hear the House and Rap card briefly so it does exist, I didn't hear much to recommend it, although there was a guitar blast sound on it.

Great thing, just hace it in my house for five hours, and it is already shaking the house!!
I just wanna know, is there anybody with a RY- 30 who's willing to share some midi-dumps with patterns? Can't find them on the net...

i have this box for 3 years now and it's awesome! highly underestimated machine. i use it with an sy77 synthcard (sinewave2)
do the synthesis is limited, one can make great sounds. at first sight you will think that this machine isn't great, but once you dive into the synthesis... wow!
you can't change sounds realtime like roland's 909 or 808 but you can record the filterchanges! (filters closed on a sound and slowly open up, very nice)
great tip: if you choose the same synthvoice twice and than stack the voices and alter the pitch and filters... you'll get great and rich sounds! worth to trie!
if you can get your hands on one.. buy it!

An excellent drum machine using digital technology. It's basically a SY77/99
synth in drum form. The sounds can be contoured to sound quite analogue
(808 snares for example).
The RY-30 is only as limited as the user is skilled.
